Is Ryan gay?

Obviously.

Lucas Grabeel pushed for his character to be openly gay and end up with a guy, but Disney wouldn't allow it. So yes, it's inferred he's gay but the movie never states it explicitly.

I've heard that Lucas Grabeel wanted him to be, but parents weren't okay with that idea, and so Disney wasn't open to it, which is the reasoning for the rather sudden love interest between him and Kelsi in the last movie.

It's okay to love something a little too much, as long as it's real to you.

I never thought he was gay in the second film. I thought he was in the first one tho.

I always assumed so. I think Ryan was always crushing on Zeke but it just wasn't going to happen because Zeke was into Sharpay. If you watch though in the first movie when Zeke baked cookies for Sharpay and she walked away from him Ryan takes the cookies and gives Zeke a smile and says good game. Nothing stood out that much in the second one but in the third when he and Sharpay are singing I Want it All and they do the little conga line with Zeke Ryan gives Zeke this look as he's passing through the curtain to the next area and it's pretty obvious that it's a very distinct smile insinuating a deeper interest than just friends.
