Why is this movie underrated?

Comments and discussion board topics seem to contradict with the IMDB user rating?

Personally, I wouldn't give this movie any more then a 4.

The movie does capture an effective sense of meloncoly and uneasyness over moving on , but the film simply doesn't take the story or its characters serious enough to work as a whole, and the music isn't noteworthy enough to overcome this.

The story spends much too much time being self-consciously "adorable", and the female lead is the only character who could pass as a believable high school student. The male lead's confliction would come off as more plausible if it didn't involve twin scholarship chances involving a highly sought after sport scholarship, and the serious chance of a scholarship offer to the most prestigious music college in the country. To have both chances, and the talent that warrents them, would seem to make him one of the most remarkably gifted and diverse high school kids in the country.

The other high school kids just come off as silly, and slightly written.

I should mention I am an adult, who has never before seen anything from this series. I suppose the movie's target audience might like it.

I don't know. I felt it was okay. It wasn't a movie that you contemplated too much about. Grease, a similar and, in my opinion, worse movie, gets quite a bit of love while people trash these movies to kingdom come.

Because ANYONE can rate it. When the ratings ability first went up, people automatically gave it ones and what not. And a lot of those didn't even see it.

Because "I don't understand. Underrated? Feels overrated to me." will be the first reaction of the majority of users to your post. You should always, ALWAYS take IMDb ratings with a grain of salt, especially with movies like this one. In terms of quality, it might not be a 3.7/10. For that, you'll want to look at RottenTomatoes.com, and preferably the Top Critic section. They review for a living, and therefore are usually more fair. That being said, the IMDb rating shows you what the majority of other users feel. If you think that the average IMDb user reflects you well enough, then stick with IMDb. Otherwise, turn to RT for ratings.

I was surprised at the ratings too.

At 22 I'm obviously too old for the HSM movies, but I appreciate a bit of nostalgia every now and then, and so I gave all three films a chance. This last one was the only one I actually managed to watch all the way trough...

I'd rate this one 5.5, (and give the previous ones a 2, at most.) I assume that the actual fanbase would rate "Senior year" much higher, but with all the haters out there, I guess the ratings kind of make sense.

Because male vote ratings waaaay more often than females and 13,937 males gave it an average 3.4, while 8360 females gave it a 5.0. It has elements (singing, dancing, romance) that will more likely appeal to females than to males.
