CIA + SF. Whats with the foreign guy?

While CIA using an elite special forces detachment(DELTA, DEVGRU, STS) instead of their SAD/SOGs is fairly common, dating back to MACV-SOG in Vietnam, I could not find a single reason for the Australian guy being a part of the unit?

The mission seemed so secret that even the squad leader did not know its purpose, yet they had a foreigner with them. While they were conducting black ops, they were not mercenaries, so I found it completely ridiculous to have someone like that as part of the team.

Maybe he was an American citizen?

That's on a need to know basis, and you don't need to know.

They said in the movie he was the Afghan expert. He might be SAS-R (Australian SAS) or UK SAS (which takes military personel from all the commonwealths- if they pass the selection course.)that had done several tours in Afghanistan. Both SAS units are operational in OEF from more or less the get go of the conflict. The UK SAS and USSF have an exchange program dating back to the 50's, it been rumored that US personnel operated with the UK in the Malayan Emergency and UK personnel operated in with US and Aussie SF troops in Vietnam. So an Aussie on the team in not such a reach.
