The water

The problem with the universe in this film franchise is that it appears to be impossible to cure the H20 of germs at the degree the virus has evolved into. It's somehow become a super plague that easily contaminates and kills anything that moves in close contact even by one small drop on the skin.

We can argue that it's possible to cure the disease and stop it from spreading, but doing so really wouldn't change that this sequel shows thousands of people nationwide becoming infected within a matter of hours to days.
