Just a thought.

No matter how depraved the movie is we will never be able to understand or comprehend the horror of Unit 731. The reality is that what they did was so repulsive, no movie, not Men Behind the Sun or Philosophy of a knife can do real justice to how evil it really was.

Put yourself in their mindset for a second. Imagine being 8 years old, with no supervision and believing in your heart that your job, your sword duty and obligation was to experiment on fire ants to better understand them for the protection of your family. Then imagine all the tools you could ever dream of at your disposal, a hammer, firecrackers, a lighter, glue, hairspray, bleach, box cutter, etc...

Now transfer that entire mentality on to the Japanese that were there. We were the ants, and they had the tools and the belief that their work was important.

Whatever, just a thought.

Not to mention they would have done it anyway since they all practically worshipped the Emperor back then. Disappointing the almighty Emperor would result in punishment; small beatings that would get passed down to lower and lower ranks. The beatings got worse. Just a mixture of blind, loyal faith in one equal man and the bushido code.

The men in that unit were not 8 years old just A holes.

If you payed attention to the Documentary aspect of this film, you would know that it was in the name of Science. The interviewee stressed that they had to experiment on humans in order to obtain relevant military and medical data. Which makes complete sense. Their medicine is so advanced because all of the relevant data they acquired during their studies.

And I agree with you completely when you say that Philosophy of a Knife and Men Behind the Sun only scratches the surface. In fact, in the beginning of Philosophy of a Knife, it is stated that the majority of Unit 731's documents were destroyed or hidden by the Japanese.

That being said, I don't really think what they did was wrong. The medical advances that were a direct result from their studies perhaps saved more lives than what they had to expend.

....Did you actually just write that?
Wow man. Just wow.

My reply is: Since you seem to be such a man for the advancement of science at the expense of a few people you will probably never know about, let me be the first to volunteer you as a subject of some of these tests. I'm sure the joy in the knowledge that mankind will advance through your sacrifice will dull the pain of the experiments. I pray and hope you realize what a stupid, ignorant, and compassionless statement you made, because it is thinking like that that allows for the atrocities discussed in the movie happen. If you come to realize how bad your comment was, I forgive you. However, if you don't, I weep for humanity.
