The problem with this movie: The main character! But who is it?

I watched this movie today in a college class about storytelling for animation and something a lot of us were confused about, and this is why I think this movie suffers a little, is that no one could pinpoint the main character.

Many thought Emille, or Lucille because of the focus the movie gave to both in presenting them, but our teacher made it clear that Raoul was in fact the main character. Now if you're like my class, a lot of you are going "What? But so and so is clearly..." but I guess because he is the only one to "Change' by the movie's end, it makes him the main character.

This frustrated me. A LOT. That doesn't make sense with how the movie was presented. It's clear that either Emille was possibly MEANT to be the MC considering his introduction and the focus we have on him at first, but then it switches focus to Lucille. Even though the story is technically Raoul's, you don't see him as much as Lucille or the flea.

I think this confusion in who exactly and for what purpose you're meant to root for is why this suffers.

About halfway though the movie I was thinking "Wait what happened to Maude?" then I had thoughts of "Wow Emille suddenly got shoved out of the picture a bit."

But then Emille ends up being the hero until the cops show up.

I adored the movie. The designs, characters, the setting, everything was great and creative, but I don't know if it was something lost in translation or if perhaps my teacher is wrong and there is no one main character, but I think this confusion is part of why the movie isn't as strong as it could be.
