ah yes! the camera is symbolic of her ability to see the world...

as it would be without a man. I haven't seen this movie, but I would bet that's what the story would be telling. I thought the Nordic countries were more socially progressive, therefore above such crap.

SPOILER ALERT

First, I might respectfully suggest that it's tough to criticize a movie on one's assumption as to what it's about if one hasn't seen it.

Keep in mind that:
1. Most importantly, the movie doesn't really support your guess
2. It is essentially a true story, based upon the recollection of one of Maria's daughters, Maja, so it reflects how Maria actually lived and behaved.
3. Was Maria abused in a bad marriage? Yes. Did she leave it? No. (Do all women today in the same situation leave their marriages? No.) But beyond that, she was an early 20th century woman, not an early 21st century woman.
4. As one who practices fine-art photography as a serious avocation, I can connect totally with her discovery of the magic of expressing herself in photography. That's what there was to it.

What does her interest in photography have to do with her relationships with men?

She has a relationship with only 3 men: her father, her husband and the photographer. The photographer helps her to realise the gift she has for photography, which lies in being able to take an image that is unusual. Her father and husband impose on her strictures that would strangle her creativity, which rescues her from a life of drudgery. Maria is not defined by the men in her life. That's the point. So it's not about her relationships with men ultimately. Women have stories beyond men.

You make it sound like men are a burden on women.
