What's the deal with Wendy?

What's her problem? I'm getting a little sick of seeing these kinds of mothers on TV and in movies, they don't let their kids watch TV, don't let them eat junk food of any kind, don't let them do anything fun. Why? And why is it in these instances it's always the mother who's made out to be the bad guy?

reply

She was annoying but fathers are usually (on TV anyway) made out to be fat incompetent dullards constantly bullied by the shrill genius skinny wives. So I like to see a retarded mom every once-in-a-while. No offense. Cheers.

But have you noticed though, in movies and TV it's always the women who are made out to be the least fun. The last ones to come around to the free spirits' way of thinking, the last ones to kick off their shoes and join in on the fun. They're always uptight, have to follow the rules, have to always behave at all times...that's something that's been in film for over 70 years, usually it's the men, the fathers, the grandfathers, etc., who are the fun ones to be around and if they come as a frigid couple the husbands are usually the first ones to thaw out. That's why Thelma & Louise caused such an uproar because it was two women going out on the road having the time of their lives and becoming the outlaw/hero/anti-hero while the men were at home cleaning house.

@novastar: The men were cleaning? Did you even watch the movie? LOL

Maybe "these kinds of mothers" want what's best for their kids?

if your cup is full, may it be again

reply

A mother who wants what's best for her kids would never act like the mother in this film.... C'mon!!! It's totally unbelievable!!!
Furthermore, a mother would try to teach them what's best by helping them form their own opinion, not just imposing inedible food she probably doesn't even like anyway!!!!

reply

Indeed, she was a nut. Patrick's only experience with marshmallows before Skeeter was he'd heard about them and saw them in a magazine once. What the hell? Outside of anyone allergic, who never had a marshmallow as a kid? And just WHO assigns pottery class at a 6 year old's birthday party? And they can't go fishing because Patrick's not a good swimmer. People who don't know how to swim at all go on cruises all the time, besides Skeeter would be with them, if anything happened, he could dive in and pull Patrick out.

reply

My point was, if you don't have kids you have no right criticizing parents.

reply

That's a ridiculous argument. Everyone has the right to their opinion on everything else. We may not all be parents, but we've all been CHILDREN and we all have our own thoughts on how they should be raised.

I have to disagree to a point. I know parents like this in real life, they think they are doing what is best. However the people I know who grew up like this are still messed up 20 years into adulthood. So the character of Wendy is very believable. Now if the movie took place in a big city, in public school and more than half the mothers where like that then it would have been unbelievable. I shudder to think how I would have turned out without television. I grew up without a lot of junk food, but once I got started I have never completely stopped.

Yes but what happened to Wendy to make her the nut she was? She was raised in the same place as Skeeter by the same person and yet he was the only one who knew how to have any fun.

reply

It wasn't explained, but Wendy said near the end that she was like that even as a child.

reply

Yeah, but why? I have never known anybody who didn't have fun as a child, didn't enjoy playing, even the ones who had really crappy lives they always knew how to have fun.

reply

Wish I could explain it. Not everyone knows how to have fun and not everyone that doesn't acts like Wendy did. And it almost seems like Wendy didn't have an imagination like Skeeter and that's why she was the way she was.

And what child doesn't have an imagination? If you're raised that way like her kids were, perhaps, but there wasn't anybody doing that with her.

reply

I think she was supposed to represent a huge contrast with Adam Sandler, that's all. So you could have those scenes where the kids go "Wow! Mom doesn't let us do this!" and he gets to be the cool uncle.

The story still could've worked with them having a 'normal' mother because an uncle is GOING to be different as primary caregiver than the mother.

reply

This is normal behavior for Cox. Remember 'Friends'?
