Why is he still making movies?

Why does any studio want him to make any more movies?

reply

reply

eh eh, one of the few comedies that Rob Schneider isn't in it ( don't get me wrong, i love Schneider, this is just an observation )

reply

reply

um i dunno if u saw it or missed him but hes the indian who gives him ferrari the horse then takes his wallet

reply

Sandler is a BIG JERK in real life, I've met the dork.

reply

NOT to be rude or anything but nobodys going to believe that you've met him and talk to him to find out that hes a jerk i mean get real.

reply

Yeah, I think he was spamming a bit too!

For what it's worth, I understand though. I know 'seems like a nice person' is usually a stupid thing to say, as celebrities can always put on an act for talk shows, but one of the reasons I said that about Sandler was I'd just seen him on daily evening magazine show 'The One Show' on BBC TV (UK).

This is a slightly odd show where the guest is introduced at the top and sits there for half-an-hour (live) while the 2 presenters introduce a pre-recorded item (5 min or so, often consumer or wildlife issues), then cut back to talk about the item with the item's presenter, maybe asking the main guest a question (often not), before going to another item, and only after about 15 mins do they talk to the main guest!

Sandler was quite easy-going during all of this, even during a 'live gardening' item at the end when an eccentric gardener was bossing him around, telling him to re-pot some plants into fertilizer(!) He was genuinely not bothered by this, didn't make a fuss or a joke, and just got on with it. I can think of quite a few 'stars' that wouldn't be like that.

Of course, none of this waffle affects Sandler's talents, or what he does with them. I'm sure there have been quite a few talents who were also 'jerks'(although I have more respect for them if they're not). I just said he seems OK because my criticism wasn't personal, that's all.

reply

correction. was awesome.

Adam Sandler is one of the more versatile actors I have ever seen, and I should know becuase I am a huge fan and have seen every single on of his movies.

I can see where you are coming from, but he is very dedicated. In 2003 he was the highest paid actor in the industry.

reply

I both agree and disagree with you. Sandler is a great actor, and one of my favorites. He's funny, but I wouldn't say he's versatile. Mostly all of his roles, to me, are the same character. But that's one thing that I really like about him, plus it's cool how a lot of the cast he works with remains the same, such as Rob Schneider. When he actually did a serious movie, Spanglish, I thought it was awful and his worst ever film. I thought click, although not a complete drama, was ok, but not great.
I think Johnny Depp is the most versatile actor...Edward Scissorhands, Captain Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd, etc.

reply

im not dissing you, but I will say that I diagree about the whole Depp being versatile thing. Not that I don't absolutely love Depp who doesnt love him? But i will say that a lot of depp's roles are the same--I mean, he always plays the same dark and gloomy or twisted, nutty character. He is in a bunch of Burton's movies as the same character i mean. True, sandler really isnt the most versatile actor I'll retract that opinion, but I wouldnt say that Depp is really versatile either, although he does have the potential I'll tell u that. Thanks for stating your opinion in a friendly way, not like a total child like a lot of the other people do. I greatly appreciate it.

reply

I know, people on this website can get rediculously and pointlessly cruel. And thank you for the same. But I still think Depp is versatile, but I know many people who think otherwise. I don't think he's always dark and gloomy, but nutty and twisted, yes lol. I don't know...I mean, he's normal is Nightmare on Elm Street, and Chocolat...crazy in the head in Secret Window...whacky as Willy Wonka and Jack Sparrow...nerdy as Ichabod Crane.
So maybe his characters are all different, but have some very similar prsonality traits?
Haha anyways...this is an Adam Sandler thread, isn't it?

reply

Okay that makes sense- different characters with similar personalities. We'll go with that then. Thanks

reply

Johnny Depp is very versatile, but even more so he is very talented. It amazed me how he portrayed such large range of emotions--from insane glee to vengeful rage--behind that perpetual scowl of his in "Sweeney Todd," and for that I think he deserved his Oscar nom. I don't why someone would consider it similar to a role like Willy Wonka, who Depp plays as awkward, anti-social, quirky, insanely imaginative, and more than a bit creepy (the face and hair was too similar to Michael Jackson's for me to feel secure :D). It's a totally different role. Also totally different is Jack Sparrow, who is VERY social and chatty, very secure with himself (unlike Willy Wonka), and really quite a good old egg despite his pirate exterior (the same cannot be said about Sweeney Todd). In Sleepy Hollow he plays a nerdy Ichabod Crane who isn't creepy like Wonka or Todd, but isn't exactly genial like Sparrow. Once again, it's a vastly different role.

I think one reason that someone may mistakenly consider Depp's roles "similar" is that he often appears in Tim Burton movies, which has similar art designs. And there's also one common thread shared with all Depp characters: they aren't normal people. So for someone who divides the world into normal and abnormal, then Depp may seem to play the "same" character all the time. But he doesn't. Not at all.

I agree, you did post very nicely. It's what threads should be like. Negativity should be kept for film reviews (if a film is bad), at least there a call that is less-than-positive can be deemed as valid.

I however, disagree with that call that Sandler isn't versatile. His role as Barry Egan in Punch-Drunk Love is both sweet and devastating. The moment where he is confronting his sisters husband (who's a dentist) about him 'not feeling right' was painful to watch, but at the same time hilarious. The film was filled with these moments.. Reign Over Me too was a film where he was given the opportunity to show diversity, and again he pulled it off subtley and beautifully.

I just hope that he either does -
a) A Leonard Cohen Biography or
b) A Bob Dylan Biography

He has both, the musical talent, and has similar features to both of them (and yes, I'm aware that they both look different).

As for Johnny Depp, my personal favourite role of his is, Ed Wood.

reply

To answer the question: because his movies always make a ton of money. that's why.

On Depp: Depp is not that versatile... most of the time, he's only good when he's playing a "character" like Sparrow, Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd. When he's playing a normal guy, he's pretty ordinary except for a few times like Brasco.

And please stop bringing up Willy Wonka. That movie sucked. It was joyless and frustrating and so was Depp.

One of the most versatile actors, if not
THE most versatile actor is Will Smith

He can do an action movie (I robot, Bad Boys)
Romantic Comedy (Hitch)
Drama (In Pursuit of Happyness)
even a suspense thriller (I am Legend)

I'm not saying all these films were great but he was great in them.

Thank you! I feel the same way. He always plays sumone crazy!

for the record, william h macy is the most versatile actor

reply

Good one, but Philip Seymour Hoffman is the right answer.

reply

You're clearly just a die-hard fan with a singular vision. Depp is great, but he is definately not the most versatile actor ever.

Off the top of my head, I can name five who have shown more range throughout their careers.

1. Daniel Day Lewis
2. Paul Giamatti
3. Edward Norton
4. Phillip Seymour Hoffman
5. Jim Carrey

Depp is dark. Sandler is goofy. They both are what they are. While dark may be intriguing it's still scary. Whereas goofy is simply harmless and the underdog is always a bit more entertaining.

reply

I'm amazed you can't see the lack of ambition implied there. 'They are what they are'? They're actors! They should be the characters they play!

'They are what they are' just proves they're typecast!

reply

well that is how I feel about them!

reply

I dunno I kind of disagree with what you said about Depp I guess and I'm not like a fan boy but um. Arizona Dreams, Donnie Brasco, Gilbert's Grape, Benny and Joon, Blow, Before night falls. There are more but ill stop I don't want to look like I'm being a jerk listing stuff off. But yeah hes done a lot of roles that are not like the ones he does in Tim Burton movies as far as I'm concerned hes just really good friends with Burton so he takes these roles and since hes so talented plays them amazingly. I think Depp is one of the best actors we have in all honesty. I mean look at Christian Bale maybe I am the only one of this planet who does not like him but hes really not versatile at all, and I mean has anyone see Harsh times? It's god awful lol. Ne ways just my grain of salt however I don't know if any of you saw Punch Drunk love? By Paul Thomas Anderson, Sandler plays a Dramatic roles and he almost won Cannes coveted best Actor for it so the guy has huge talent I think he just needs to Branch out. If you like him check that movie out. It made my Jaw drop, his performance is Incredible.

reply

Johnny Depp, the most versatile actor? I think not. Edward Scissorhands, Captain Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd, and most all of his other roles are him acting like an idot. The creepy, dark, odd male roles are all he ever does. Adam Sandler is a comedian with a serious side, like in Reign On Me... Basically, Johnny Depp sucks.

reply

Try watching Finding Neverland, OK? Donnie Brasco, Chocolat, Nick of time, (ok, this last one sucked, but it does show Johnny Depp in a "normal" role)

I find it hilarious when people say Johnny sucks because all he can play are creepy, dark roles as opposed to "normal" ones, well, he IS an actor, right? Can you honestly tell me that Forrest Gump and Alex from "A Clockwork orange" were normal?

And who could ever turn a character like Jack Sparrow into a Oscar-nominee performance? That's some serious acting.

Depp is a great actor, but he has a thing for unusual characters, and it is what he does best. Frankly, I'd rather see Tom Hanks and Edward Nortan (who are my two other favorite actors) playing "normal" characters and let Johnny continue making history with his crazy performances.

And sorry, but Adam was terrible in Reign over me, he was only good in Punch-Drunk-Love.

As for Adam Sandler still making movies, well, it is quite simple, when it comes to box office this guy kicks ass, so we're still gonna see a lot of him, that's for sure.

Damn. That's sad to hear -- haven't seen Reign Over Me yet; I was fascinated by how engaging Sandler was in PDL and the trailer for ROM made me hopeful, but maybe it was just the way it was cut and scored -- emotionally manipulative ;)

Lol read the post above, cuz clearly you should watch some more movies.

There's a thesaurus in the library. Yeah is under "Y". Go ahead, I'll wait.

reply

Eh? Who mentioned Depp?? I was talking about many mainstream films, not the actors who give the films a bit of undeserved credibility.

reply

See "Reign Over Me", it's a drama and it's Sandlers best role yet and a truly great film.

reply

Reign over me is a truly great film if your looking to be depressed and see the slowest moving movie ever.

Thats coming from a long time Sandler fan to but that movie was horrible.

"Are you gonna bark all day, little doggy, or are you gonna bite?"

reply

Reign Over Me was a very serious movie, and I thought it was absolutely amazing.

reply

If you want good serious films with Sandler...watch Punch Drunk Love or Reign Over Me. Reign Over Me is by far his best performance, and to say Don Cheadle has nothing on him in that film is an understatement.

reply

I think he should just stick to comedies. I didnt like him in Spanglish even though the movie wasnt bad.

Last Seen
Spanglish, 6.5/10
Lemony Snickets, 6.5/10
Jarhead, 7.0/10

reply

Tom Hanks is the most versatile comedic roots actor, but Adam Sandler is starting to get there eg. Reign over me.....All Depp movie are the same he almost always even looks the same at least Sandler switches up the hair once in a while or does a funny accent that isnt 1800.s english ( I guess )....Sandler is the jawndus tho!!!

reply

Adam Sandler is funny, but definitely not versatile. That's like calling Vin Diesel versatile. He's good at what he does, but let's be serious here. Versatile is Christian Bale, Kevin Spacey, Viggo Mortensen, Daniel Day-Lewis, Tom Hanks. I love a good Sandler movie as much as everyone else. He fills a niche and fills it well.

reply

How is christian bale versatile? Hes the modern day action hero. Not to mention a jerk of epic proportions. Id love to hear hows hes versatile.

reply

Why is Adam Sandler still in movies??

because Adam Sandler is too popular and awesome

reply

Adam Sandler "versatile"? Are you kidding? He plays exactly the same character in pretty much everything he's ever been in. I'm praying that in this one, he doesn't fight someone. Please Adam, give up the fight scenes.

Maybe because his movies make ten times what they cost to make.

Maybe because he has proved his acting ability in Punch Drunk, Spanglish and Click.

Maybe because he is one of the most successful comedians ever.

Maybe because he has legions of fans.

It could have something to do with him owning his own production company.

It could have something to do with his appeal to kids and adults.

Maybe it has something to do with the Wedding Singer being one of the most successful and played movies on Cable television.

reply

Why are you still making threads. Adam well keep making films becasue his films always make a lot of money and he is a very funny man.

reply

You're forgetting Reign Over Me to that list!

reply

Adam Sandler Rocks nuff said!!

reply

because he's the best

reply

you must not have seen grandma's boy

reply

Adam had nothing to do with Grandma's Boy, other than financing it.

Allen Covert wrote it (although he had help from others), and if you didn't notice, Adam doesn't even show up in this movie, unlike Allen (who is in every Happy Madison production).

Actually he's not in every Happy Madison Production. He's not in

You Don't Mess with the Zohan
Click
The Benchwarmers
Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo
Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star
The Hot Chick
The Master of Disguise
Joe Dirt
The Animal

He has been in almost every movie Adam has been in (as the main character) since Happy Gilmore. He was also in a few movies before that one with Adam. He met Adam Sandler when they attended New York University together. There are others that Adam puts in almost all of his films as well.

I think Adam is one of the funniest guys in Hollywood. I remember seeing him on the Cosby Show before he was ever on Saturday Night Live. I like every movie he has made except for Punch Drunk Love.

reply

Alan Covert isn't in You Don't Mess With The Zohan?

Not even an uncredited cameo? You know this?!?

You have already seen it?!?

Is it good? How have you seen it? It doesn't come out for a couple more months here in The United States.

reply

Adam is an icon and institution for this generaion & the previous generation. Yea, not all of his movies and jokes land, but he has made some GREAT comedies and has proven to be a great actor in drama (ie Reign over me, Spanglish). He's a hit at the box office. Even one of his lesser films, Chuck and Larry grossed nearly 200mil world wide, exceding the budget which was only 69,000,000. He's a box office money maker. He should keep making movies. Period.

reply

The budget for Chuck and Larry was actually 85 million -.- + advertising costs, etc..

reply

Because people like him (including me) and he is a good comedy actor, like it or not. He also just happens to be a Box Office God.

Look at this:

I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry $119 million
Click $137 million
The Longest Yard $158 million
50 First Dates $120 million
Anger Management $135 million
Mr. Deeds $126 million
Big Daddy $163 million
The Waterboy $161 million
The Wedding Singer $80 million

I rest my case.

After movies like Spanglish and Reign Over Me, I'm convinced that Adam Sandler is more than a comedic genius, he's a great actor. True he has done his share of goofy comedies, especially Little Nicky, but he's done very well for himself since the early 90's.
