What the *beep* was Ewans wife thinking?

I mean she literally never touched a motorbike, and now she wanted to be on a trip through Africa???

Apart from the fact that "Long way Round" was so cool because it was three buddys on an adventure trip, and a wife fits in such a trip as she would fit in in an men's evening at a bar, it is much too dangerous for a freaking amateur.

I got really mad when I saw in the beginning Ewan and Charly riding their bikes very skilled over that dirt-track, and then this stupid women was circling around on her baby-bike during driving lessons...And that 4 months before the actual trip started!

reply

I believe they said she had started riding bikes before the prep for the trip? Perhaps I heard wrong. And anyway, she did her part of the trip just fine, everything turned out fine, and a husband and wife shared a really amazing adventure together. Besides, before Long Way Round Ewan had never done ANY off road biking before prep started for that trip.

reply

Yeah great, everything turned out fine, so they were just lucky... >_<

And Long Way Round was much longer, but the only dangers they encountered there were Bears and muddy rivers. Nothing compared to armed bandits roaming the african outback.

I adore Eve and even I have to agree with you on this one Alpha268.

When I first heard that Eve would join the lads during part of the trip I thought it might make the dynamics of the trip a bit odd but then I thought ok... it would be fun to see Ewan and Eve together. I also knew she is friends with Charley and his wife so it would be really fun. I had wondered why Ollie (Charley's wife) wasn't going along but I knew I'd find out once the show hit tv.

Then I watched the show and was just blown away that Eve had never ridden a bike before and just woke up one Sunday morning and decided "she just had to go".... as if she were deciding what dress to wear that day! I realize she trained hard to learn how to ride but the trip had such potential for danger and she had never even ridden a scooter before, much less a monster of a road bike! I was just dazed with astonishment. I still am really.

Eve (and Ewan) were really really lucky that nothing bad happened. As a mother I kept thinking about those three little girls left at home and how devastating it would have been had something bad happened to one or both of their parents on that trip.

Next trip I hope that it's back to an all lad's trip... or if wives come along I'd like to see Charley's wife join them too. Fair is fair after all. LOL

reply

It really was sort of crazy, and I thought the same thing about their daughters. On the other hand, I found it very touching how happy Ewan was to have Eve there, even for such a short time. Then when David said to her that she just wanted to share in a part of her husband's adventure, that really got to me. I mean, yeah, they talk on the phone (at least this time they were able to) and Ewan can tell her about the things he's seeing and doing, but that's hardly the same thing when he's gone for months at a time. I know that's the case when he's away filming and Eve and the girls don't go along, but that's different; that's not an adventure, is it? Luckily, in the end it all turned out fine. Also, with so little riding experience, I think it was pretty brave of her to give it a shot. I cringed every time she toppled over.

I was really scared for all of them when I heard they were going to Africa, and I'm so relieved that it all went well.

You and me both anikal!!

It was wonderful to be able to check into the BBC site this trip and watch their progress... pretty much as it was happening. I can remember during the Long Way Round trip wondering for months if Ewan and Charley were safe and what was going on. The website didn't get updated but twice the whole Summer as I recall!

The most we heard was by googling for news.... we'd get little news articles out of Russia about lethal bug bites and from Canada about near fatal car crashes and it just drove me insane not knowing what was going on. This trip seemed more dangerous and yet we had far more info and so many lovely videos while the trip was going on that I hardly noticed the actual feel of danger.

I'm just glad they are back home again and we can watch it on DVD now.

Lets just hope an extended version hits the stores soon!!

reply

I know! I absolutely loved those updates on the BBC website. It was so great knowing where they were and what they were up to, and definitely great knowing that they were safe. I still get the willies over that rear-ending crash in Canada. Ewan was extraordinarily lucky to come out of that unscathed.

I agree with you about the extended version. I really hope they do that.

reply

Well I got an email earlier in the month through my LWD membership that said we could expect more good things from the LWD team in the new year so I'm hopeful they meant an extended version. And as long as we are wishing, I'll take a coffee table book too! LOL

reply

Oh, yeah, I got that email too. I forgot! Brain like a sieve... Hopefully that is what they meant.

reply

Oh and you didn't see the subtext in this. E and E had absolutely no thoughts about the effect on Charley, particularly when Ollie was sick before he left, not having her with him and Eve being there would have rubbed it in. The whole ride depended on a buddy system. Charley wasn't even asked. She decided to pull a Yoko and Ewen didn't even think about the effect on Charley. Selfish all round. As she said in one ep. she was jealous and couldn't stay out of the limelight. It made it easier for Ewen to have wife along for part of the trip and therefore not so much roughing it.She was lucky nothing happened.

Agree

If they weren't going to include what Charley's wife thought of Eve being included, or for that matter what any of the other members of the team thought about it, making it a true documentary, I will then stick with the times I did enjoy it and flick/bypass the rest, as all of us do in our daily lives.

I liked it. I forwarded anytime Eve was included and the times it seemed as though these two (Boorman and Mac Gregor) spoke in a concilatory Hallmark tone.

Jezus, I watched a short.

It felt to me like a bid for self-promotion on Eve's part.

I've just finished watching the entire series, and Eve served no other purpose than to give the audience something else to look at. In essence, she was just part of the scenery.

God, what a sexist jerk you are. Eve needs to "serve some purpose" for you ? What on earth does that mean? She was just part of the scenery? Do you have any idea what an a**hole you sound like?

reply

I was just watching this on BBC 2 and it was so sweet when Charley was getting all jealous about the wife joining them on the trip. The scene where they were going over danger scenarios were intense and I thought maybe it was a good idea for Eve not to be there.

reply

It did unbalance the show with Eve's presence. I could possibly have put up with it had she joined earlier on in say relatively safe countries such as Britain, France or Italy. But to take chances in a dangerous continent such as Africa is bordering on being irresponsible, more so on their children.

I don't doubt Eve had body guards and all sorts of people off-camera if the going did get tough, but why bother at all, couldn't Ewan get it in his head what tension her presence would bring to the team?

If Ewan and Eve want to bike down through Africa (or any continent come to that) then they should do it in their own time.

reply

Yup, on their own... that's more responsible.

At least with the team, there's immediate help if an emergency arose. This was the most responsible way for them to do it. If it was just the two of them doing that- then I'd agree with everyone else about the needless risk of both parents doing things.

I mean, if you're taking the risk argument, you can say the same thing about Ewan risking himself for the trek. Why is it so OK for him, and not for her? I know- it's the both parents gone idea... but what honestly gives him the ok to risk himself, and why is it so much more irresponsible for her?

After a 10 month gap I decided to re-watch LWD once again. Such a long gap is unusual for me because during that intervening time I have re-watched Long Way Round three times! And yet I really haven't had the same kind of enthusiasm to do same with LWD since my last viewing in December of last year.

Two reasons I think: one, I didn't think LWD was all that entertaining as LWR, possibly because there was a sense of "we've seen it all before in LWR" at least in terms of concept. So perhaps the novelty wasn't quite so apparent with this follow up.

secondly, my lack of impetus for this show was probably aimed at the Eve dynamic. I wasn't overly keen with her presence first time round. Perhaps it was because she intentionally gate-crashed the adventure half way through and from that point on it became more unbalanced and distracting, even though I could understand her desire to join in.

Anyway, I re-watched the entire show on DVD these last couple of days and I must say my feelings for point 1 from above hasn't changed much. It's a good show, with some breath-taking scenery, graphic imagery & horrific personal stories. But other than that it was just ok.

However, when Eve arrived I wasn't at all perturbed or irritated by her presence. Perhaps because I'd gotten used to the idea of her being around. As for the "boys-own" dynamic being knocked off its orbit, well yes it did I must admit, but in a good way on reflection. The arrival of Eve brought introduced some welcome relief as well as a different perspective on what was going on during the trip.

I will say Ewan & Eve were quite irresponsible for both going on the trip while leaving their children hoping nothing will horrific will happen to their parents. But I'm pretty sure all parties concerned discussed this long and hard before the trip even started.

But fair play to Eve, she did well and can only have served as an inspiration to other women out there wanting to see the world on two wheels, or four in fact!

reply

I think it was self-indulgent for Ewan to give her a green light and another way should have been found for him to share the trip better with his wife. She could have tagged along with the support team, for example or like another poster suggested ridden the European leg of the journey.
Riding motorbikes is something he and Charley share, not him and his wife. Also from what we saw she fell over a lot on rough terrain.

reply

i agree, she didn't add too the dynamic, she lessened it with her presence. Ewan was totally under her thumb, man, i would do it differently, let those long adventures be with my mates and just go on a seperate bike trip with the wife.

reply

To be fair to Eve though she did "give it a go!" And perhaps she may have convinced female viewers that biking isn't necessarily the preserve of men and that anyone with the will can get on two wheels and see the world. Its just that in this case it seemed like a huge jump to take. As I said in an earlier post if they did just a LWD of the UK (for example) with Ewan, Eve, Claudio and Charley then I'd be more inclined to accept the "new dynamic"

reply

And I thought "Good for her".

Maybe because it's something I'd end up wanting to do, maybe it's because I'm a woman planning on visiting Africa, and it's something I would want to experience with my husband in her place.

She did pretty well, and I don't think her being a woman should have anything to do with her wanting to go. I've always fit in well with my boyfriend's friends, and while I am one to say "No, go and have a guy's night", there are plenty of times I've had to turn down the invites. Saying she she doesn't belong because she's a woman on a guy's trip is just sexist- and no reason for her to miss out on the experience.

Yeah, Africa is dangerous, even traveling with armed guards and such- but not for nothing, just them traveling somewhere by car together, or by a plane can be just as dangerous.

I say good for her.

I do believe that Ewan does his own fair bit of falling over. So your point is?

There wasn't much footage but it looked like she fell over every 5 minutes on un-graded roads, Ewan's riding skills seemed to be up to scratch in LWD.

reply

she reminded me of Yoko Ono
p.s but she is really hot though, and that slight accent!! ooh lala

reply

Yes, in the first trip (Long Way Round) Ewan was hit from behind in Canada by a young kid in a car. Ewan was ok because thankfully he took the brunt of the force in the carrying cases on the back of the bike rather than on the wheel. Had the car actually hit the wheel Ewan would have been on the road and possibly run over. It was quite scary.

You can see it here... it's about four minutes in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuZdUeBeo3w

When Eve joined the African trek, I was also disappointed. The appeal of LWR was in watching the personal relationship between two guys and their small crew as they shared a long-distance journey. A buddy flick, if you will. Eve's arrival on the trip totally changed the film's dynamic.

On the one hand, I can understand how being away from one's spouse for months can be taxing. Ewan and Eve probably felt lonely. He felt homesick and she wanted a taste of adventure instead of being stuck at home with the kids. I sympathized with their reasons for arranging a brief get-together. Yet I felt that it was unfair to the rest of the team--especially Charlie--who were experiencing the same challenges and inconveniences as the McGregors. What about their needs?

Next time, I hope the guys will only meet their families at designated stops (i.e. cities/towns) and not have them tag along while riding on the road.

reply

To be honest I did feel LWD should have been rebranded "The McGregors Family Comes To Town" because if it wasn't Eve hogging some of the spotlight it was Ewan's mom, dad and other relatives popping up all over the place.

And I looked & I beheld a pale horse & the name that sat on him was Death & Hell followed with him.

reply

Agreed; however, to be fair, Ewan didn't know his mom was going to pop in for a visit just as he didn't know his dad was coming in LWR. The crew surprised him with both those appearances. Personally, I thought it would have been nice to have a relative surprise Charley also, but I do not have a say. The Eve thing did bother me. I definitely felt like she was Yoko-ing it. Charley especially, but also Dave and Russ didn't like the idea from the start and Ewan just ignored them. Plus when she actually arrived, Charley had to go riding on his own because the terrain was too rough for her. And what threw me over the edge was at the end when Eve said that whatever the next adventure was she was planning on going for the entire journey.

Hello. I'm the The Doctor.

reply

Yeah, it sucked that she had to get in on it.

I think that it's great that she learned to ride, and was motivated by Ewan's love of riding. But I'm sure that there're plenty of opportunities for them to go on a trip for a few days or a week - without having to insinuate herself into this special relationship and adventure.

She should've just gone on the beginning ride, like his dad, and left it at that.

reply

I don't think Eve's inexperience was a major issue. After all Ewen had never done any offroad riding before LWR so he was very inexperienced himself on the first one. However I still feel that her being in the series detracted from the buddy adventure that made LWR so entertaining. On the other side however Ewen was clearly very happy that she was there so I guess it' simply a matter of opinion.
