What always annoys me in this kind of family drama hollywood style is how the kids are conveniently never there. They are not awakened when parents scream, they are not there when there are guests, there is no need to explain them things, and fight in front of them. They have no existence whatsoever as characters in this film. I get that motherhood is a prison and a regret for April, but it makes things so artificial...

The movie took place prior to video games and cable TV. The kids were then outside more. They explained they were at a birthday party for one scene and next door at Millie's for another.
Yes, in real life it is worse for the children and they all too often have to witness arguments and more.
