Did she wind up in an institution? Did she die? Did she go to Paris? I didn't read the book.

She killed herself.

She didn't intend to kill herself. She attempted to abort her pregnancy, knowing the risks after 12 weeks, and bled out. The doctors initially assume she has had a miscarriage but Frank tells Shep "she did it to herself," meaning losing the fetus was no accident. After John told her that he was glad he wasn't going to be that kid, she couldn't take it anymore and hoped that getting rid of the pregnancy would solve all of their problems.
