Okay, a simple question

Don't get me wrong, taking it as it was without looking for plot holes I enjoyed this movie. The only thing I really have to ask is... where did the killer (John Terry) get his information from? That's some serious detective work done there - hats off!

I'll listen to any suggestions, but I don't expect a proper answer :)

This seems to be a big mystery and nobody has any answers. You might have a better chance of finding out who shot JFK.

It appears that the killer has psychic powers and just knew all this stuff.

There were several establishing shots of the killer's workshop showing newspaper clips about everybody involved but the mystery remains how he knew about Sully loaning the money or Leon who supplied the gun or even the priest who was sworn to secrecy of what he knew.

The answer you are looking for has not and can't be explained. Pretty much like the ending. It just happened.

reply

All the stuff he knew was simple to find. I really don't know why it seems so hard to understand for you...

reply

Elaborate please.

The killer (the guy in the mask) said he had been planning for two years. I think he would be able to solve some mysteries over the course of two years.

reply

Ok, that doesn't explain anything. There are some things that would be impossible to know, no matter how much research.

His son obviously knew most of the important stuff, and could have passed it along. The rest could be inferred / filled in over time. For instance, the son knows the Chinese woman misidentified him. The son knows the prosecutor faked evidence. The son knows who raped him in jail. And so on.

Also, some of the stories that were related (like the rape of the lawyer and her killing of the rapist) had nothing to do with why she was there. The father may not have even known about that. It had no bearing on what happened to the son. Ditto for some of the other stories the nine revealed.

The son didn't know the DA faked the evidence, only that fake evidence was presented.

No one could ID the priest. The mobster and the gun dealer only had tertiary minor contact with Christian and even they didn't know that. How the hell would anyone

1. Figure out it was Christian with no evidence
2. Figure out he did it because he owed money to a mobster from years back.
3. Figure out he bought a gun from a guy who had just sold his last gun and didn't know the person he sold it to and was never arrested for it.

The son knew NONE OF THIS, and no one else did either. Because the father started this quest after all these events, he wouldn't have been able to spy on them for this info either. He somehow obtained information about events that only consisted of two people who never told anyone else.

No one ever does that. No cop, not Sherlock Holmes. No one, ever. That's the kind of stuff that evaporates from the earth forever.

reply

Absolutely right.
I find it extraordinary how people on these boards can make such sure declarations but not be able to elaborate on them or defend them! Here is my reading of the 9 'crimes' and whether the killer could realistically have known about them.

1. CHRISTIAN committed the robbery, and let Wade take the rap.
NO. The killer may have known Wade was innocent but he couldn't know who was guilty.

2. LEON sold Christian the gun.
NO. Even if the killer did somehow know that Christian was the robber (a big IF), how could he know where he got the gun?

3. SULLY gave Christian the motive to commit the robbery.
NO. This follows from (1) and (2).

4. THE PRIEST knew that Wade was innocent, and he didnt tell anyone.
NO. Again, this follows from (1). But even if the killer somehow found out that Christian was the robber, how could he know that he had confessed it to the priest? He might have assumed it but he couldn't know it.

5. KELLY falsified the evidence.
MAYBE. I suppose it's possible he could have worked this out - if he was absolutely certain that his son was innocent.

6. JACKSON helped Kelly falsify the evidence.
MAYBE. See (6). It's a real stretch though!

7. CHAN mis-identified Wade as the robber.
YES. This one is fair enough.

8. COOGAN raped Wade in prison and infected him.
YES. Wade could have told him.

9. EDDIE denied Wade the 'miracle drug'.
YES. Eddie signed the letters, so the killer could identify him easy enough.

Realism is out of the equation here. We're talking about a movie. But I will agree that the plot is somewhat far-fetched.

Despite two years of preparation, I don't think he could have found out about all of them.

There's a scene where Kelley says to Jackson (or whoever, I don't remember now), "Our affair was becoming increasingly public", which might mean that their affair might have been in the news. It's a fact that Wade was falsely convicted, with the hair sample from the scene matching his own. If you think about it, there's no chance that the samples would match, unless someone tampered with it. Give it some thought and the only person you would accuse is the prosecutor.. and IF (it's a pretty big IF) her affair with Jackson was becoming public, the killer could have assumed she tampered with the evidence with his help).

But I'm not sure how he could have known it was Christian that robbed the store, unless maybe he was at the same church during his confession. But then, I'm not sure how these things are done as I'm not a christian.

If HE did overhear the confession (again, forgive me if I'm wrong here, as I have no idea about this.. just my assumption), then he would know every single detail he wanted to.

the way i see it. He killed the real robber first because he told him where he got the gun and why he robbed the place and to prevent him from telling the others why they were there. He probably also told him that he told another person before him, the priest. the question is how did he find the robber in the first place? my guess? the kid had a big mouth and eventually told somebody else besides the priest and with this guy running for 2 years asking questions, is not that difficult to believe that he, the shooter, found out about it.
