Ever wonder?

Does anyone wonder how this show would have been received if the creators didn't use Flash Gordon, but instead came up with a original idea of their own? What if they stuck with the idea that the hero's Father came up with a way to, oh, I don't know, to not only travel between worlds using a rift blaster, but also universes. They could have stuck with the concept of that water was the main reason for conflict in the series, i.e., the catalyst for the series story telling. Instead of calling the hero of the show Flash Gordon, they could call him something like Charlie Jade. Whoops! Sorry folks, that's a show from 2005. Hmmmm.... Peter Hume must have saw this excellent example of sci-fi television and thought, "What a great idea! Now how can I rip it off?"

It would probably be blasted for ripping off Sliders.

That was the problem with this show Rune. With this shows "Rift Blasters", it was already a cheap rip-off of Sliders.

The concept was fine, by any name, it's just the execution that was average at best. They go to another planet which looks just like Earth with a colored filter over the footage. They don't want aliens that look like aliens because they're silly I guess, so you get aliens that look like humans. And instead of being stranded on this other planet the heroes can go home at will, probably for budgetary reasons so they can just shoot stuff on Earth without trying to make it look like an alien planet. They might as well have been feuding with the neighbors on the adjacent spread of land. This sci-fi show had most of the sci sucked out of it.

What's sad is how awesome the new DYNAMITE Flash Gordon Comic is- it shows just how piss poor Peter Hume's rape of this franchise was exactly. And yeah we like to beat this dead horse every so often...

To be honest Lenox, we don't really need to beat down this show anymore. I mean, even the folks behind it involved with the Sci-Fi, er, I mean the SYFY channel now know it is a dead horse themselves. I just feel vindicated that the "creative" minds behind this version, were flushed out of the system, as it were in entertaiment terms.

Lunchbox, I respect your comments about excution, and of course what you say about budgetary reasons. Here was the main reason that alot of Flash Gordon fans hated this show. The original version dealt with cool concepet of a renegade planet, Mongo, randomly floating thru space, and kicking ass of any other terriestial planet it came across on Mings will. One of the coolest things about Flash Gordon, was the, well, cool spaceships, and the arial combat. The fact that the sci fi channel decided to rip off a "Sliders" idea of "travel", well, it was insulting to us fans who love Flash Gordon.
