This is a sad, sad version of the first version!

The original Pay Back is the only Mel Gibson Movie I own, and likely would own. I accidentally bought this watered down Hollywood version and I am glad to say I have a use for the Disc of the Directors Cut. I have added it to my other movies that I use for target practice. Because that is about all this version is good for in my opinion.

I freaking hate Hollywood and everything that it stands for! They continually dumb down movies and TV so that America just becomes stupider and stupider. At least the original version had the balls to show a movie that was reasonably cutting edge. Now when the original doesn’t sell, they try to water it down and sell it as the directors cut. Watch out because they will soon begin watering down “Man on Fire” and “The Usual Suspects” and other movies that were not big sellers at the movies, but some idiot tried make into a seller.

IMHO, this is a sad “remake”, and it is too bad that they even decided to make something as watered down as this movie. The original was a decent movie, not great, but decent. And because of the “rawness” of the original, and the edginess of the characters are what made the first one a movie not only worth watching, but worth owning. If I had the chance to pick between this one and the original one with Kris Kristofferson I would without a doubt choose the first version of Payback, and this version should have stayed on the cutting floor, or at best stayed with Brian Helgeland, so he could show others what his friends how much he would have screwed up a decent Movie!

You really don't have any idea what you're talking about.

I liked the Director`s Cut. The original version back in 1999 was good as well. But the new version was truer to the original intention of the movie.

If you think about Porter (The Mel Gibson Character) would never kidnapped the boss` son to get his money back in the 1999 version.

Hey madcaplaughs-1,

You do realize that the Director's Cut was the ORIGINAL version until "Hollywood" screwed with it, right? The Director's Cut is a much superior version b/c it isn't watered down for the mainstream.

Get your facts straight before coming here.

reply

agreed, get your facts right, this movie IS the original. they were completed a year apart - this version was completed before Mel played in Lethal Weapon 4!!

Yeah, what kidentertain and traer-2 said.

If you hate Hollywood and how they water down movies, then why do you even like the theatrical cut?
"Straight Up" is the original version. It's the one that was taken and watered down into the theatrical version. I'm surprised people still don't get that.

hu675, why would Porter not kidnap Bronson's son?

reply

For me it would be because he seems to be a "straighter" character. Kidnapping someone's son seems slightly low, and Porter in other situations in the film have treated people (fairly) decently as long as they weren't trying to hide things from him, and he seems to be a much more genuine guy than to kidnap someone who has nothing to do with his situation (however "benign" his intentions ultimately are).

I think it works in both versions, I certainly wasn't scratching my head in the first one wondering why he was doing what he was doing, but the Dir Cut seems to be more true to his character. If that leaves a more exciting film is up to the person watching the film. :)

I wasn't expecting such a huge difference from the "original" version. I nearly started laughing when a heard a woman or what sounded like a Chinese guy over the speaker phone. I think the theatrical movie seemed more believable than this crap.. "Carter! Carter!" "You just don't get it, do you, you dumb *beep*" "I sure hope your talking to him and not me" lmao

Liked the theatrical cut quite more.

I have two questions for you.

If you hate Hollywood and everything it stands for why are you a member of a movie website and spending time watching and writing about movies?

You know 95% of all movies come from Hollywood right?
