Question for Nicholas Sparks' fans ***Spoilers***

I read a few of his books, mostly the ones that were being turned into movies because I can not read a book after I see the movie so if I see a movie coming out based on a book that looks interesting I'll go out and get the book before the movie comes out.....Anyway, Has he EVER written a book with a happy ending? I think that Nights in Rodanthe in particular would have been a much better movie had Richard Gere's character lived. You expect it now, you know that there is going to be some tragic unnecessary ending. It just frustrates me, guess I was just in the mood for a happy ending tonight. What was I thinking watching this garbage????

I have seen his movies and agree that they always have sad endings. This is the first actual book that I have read by him. The only reason why I picked up the book was because I saw a preview and I really thought it looked quite good. When I finished the book, I realized that I couldn't go see the movie because I would have the same reaction that I had when I saw The Notebook in the theaters. I agree- I really would have liked it if his character would have lived. In the book the mom and daughter have that connection because her daughter's husband passes away. Yet they don't explain that part. Since they don't show that part they could have ideally changed the movie. The daughter does show her sympathy towards her mother bringing them closer after this tragedy.

The Choice has a good ending and so does True Believer.

True Believer doesn't have a happy ending if you read At First Sight - but that can be seen as having a happy(ish) ending.

Nicholas Sparks was once quoted to have said he mostly writes tragedies, so it shouldn't be a surprise that most of his books will either have a tragic ending, or a tragic concept. It's just his style - some people love it, others don't.

I totally agree. The movie would have been better if it had a good ending. There was no purpose in making him die. Just plain stupid.

The ending in the Sparks book A bend in the road isn't all that sad. It's a bit sad but not like this movie...

I also agree about the book being too tragic with death...like most of his books. The Wedding is my favorite Sparks book and it has a happy ending. I would recommend it...it is the sequel to The Notebook.

Didn't The Guardian end ok?

I think the idea of "....and they lived happily ever after" makes me sick. i think I like Sparks' style. I think 'A walk to remember' is still one of the best books ever written. I never got to watch the movie coz i thought it will erase the impression i got from the book.

suprisingly i thought for once that the movie a walk to remember was a million times better than the book, the chemistry between landon and jamie was amazing x

The rescue has a happy ending.
the wedding

I disagree with a walk to remember movie being better then the book...I think the book was much better and it was more romantic.
I think what ruined the movie was that they tried to bring teen anx into the movie. Having everyone making fun of here and having all the bull about bullies and blah blah blah. I mean they didnt show what the walk to remember was. In the book it truly was a walk to remember in the movie she was much healthier then she was intended to be.

I see his endings as bittersweet. Yes they are sad, but not so much that there isn't a light at the end of the tunnel for the protagonist. In Nights in Rodanthe she is sad because she lost Paul, but she did find her sense of self again and she has a stronger connection with her daughter. In A Walk to Remember Landon did lose Jamie, but he became a better man having known her and he goes on with his life and looks back on his time with her fondly (as does Adrienne with Paul in NIR). The Notebook is the same in that yes Allie dies (and I believe Noah does as well) but they had one last great moment together and there is the feeling that they will be together forever. Theirs was a love that will never end, even in death. It's really all in how you look at it. I agree that happily ever after would be too corny. Life isn't really like that.

The Choice has a happy ending. I was quite relieved by how it ended.

Dear John didn't have a happy ending neither ended tragically (death, specifically). But still sad. You'll get what i mean when you read it. :)
