What a downer! Why did they have to kill him? I mean I kind of saw it coming, since I was getting a "Message in a Bottle" vibe from the whole movie, but... dude. WHY.

Well, Nicholas Sparks wrote both books, so no wonder you got the "Message in a Bottle" vibe off of this one. All of his books end like this... "A Walk to Remember", "The Notebook", "Dear John"... and these are just the ones they turned into movies.
