Outer Banks

Has anyone been to the Outer Banks, or Rondanthe specifically? I've been to the Outer Banks, but I was on a different part. I did see the horses while I was there though. That was cool. It made me want go go back! Anyone else?

reply

I've lived on the Outer Banks for 25 years, and was an extra in the movie. I love it here!!

reply

Obxwings...what part were you as an extra? That's awesome!!!

I was a dancer in the scene on the pier. You can see me just to the right of Diane Lane when she is dancing with the old man. I'm wearing a brown shirt and am tall with brown hair. It was an exciting experience, and it was cool to see myself 10 feet tall on the big screen.

reply

I've stayed in Rodanthe every summer for 16 years, and I LOVE it there! It made me "homesick" when she walked by/under the pier because I walk that every day, and stop in at Jo-Bob's here and there!!

However, the wild horses at the end... um, I've NEVER seen that on Hatteras Island because wild horses or ponies don't roam Hatteras. My family and I couldn't help but laugh at that! Well, we also thought it funny that the house belonged to the great-grandmother when the house is really about 20 years old.

reply

That's interesting. I went down there about 5 years ago, and I'd heard of the wild ponies. And I could have swore we saw them and took pictures. Unless I'm confused or remembering it wrong.

there were horses on ocracoke island as well as farther north near corolla. a baby one was hit by a car and killed so they were pinned up and not allowed to roam free anymore. this was a number of years ago.

they are not, however, on hatteras island.

also, we don't have salmon, and you don't take a ferry to reach the house when coming from raleigh. also, he was driving the wrong way on the bridge (the curved one) he was heading north, you'd head south across that bridge if heading towards the house. i guess the shot heading south isn't as attractive as seeing the curve in the bridge up ahead when coming down from the tall part of the bridge.

as a life long local, i spotted a few "errors in geography" that can be added to the goofs section.

There are horses on Shankleford Banks and roam free ... beautiful animals.

"A man that wouldn't cheat for a poke don't want one bad enough".

reply

That's a book.

Can you fly this plane?
Surely you can't be serious.
I am serious, and don't call me Shirley

reply

im pretty sure the horses are up in corolla and don on ocracoke island.

The horses are at Shackleford Banks...WAY south of Rodanthe. They would, and could never get to where she was.

reply

Actually, there are wild horses on Ocracoke Island (which isn't that far away but they'd have to swim)and to the north in Corolla. Both places are on the Outer Banks.

Coincidentally, my daughter was in the Lost Colony this past summer, and was thrilled when Andy Griffith came backstage several times to meet and greet with the cast.

They still have the singers before the performance on the path from the entrance to the theater. Saw the show quite a few times this summer due to my daughter's involvement, and it was very good. The costume shop burned down about a year ago, and there was a tremendous race on to remake the hundreds and hundreds of costumes needed by this season - some of them are quite intricate. But anyway, everything was finished in time.

i changed the battery in andy's car back in the late 80's.

reply

has anyone seen him in a couple years?
man is a complete jerk!
literally yelled at me once in seamark.
all i did was say hi, didn't know it was him because i wasn't even paying that much attention.
my grandfather is an auto mechanic and has done work for him and he's always been an a-- to him and my uncle so they told him not to come back.

I adore the Outer Banks and have vacationed many times-my husband actually grew up going every summer as he is originally from VA. Yet now we are Californians who take almost every vacation on the east coast! I Love the beaches there-I even have an OBX sticker on my car and only a few people have ever heard of it out here in CA! They don't know what they're missing! OBX is the perfect vacation for our family. Our boys especially love the pirate lore (loved Adrienne's reference to "Edward Teach"-but she didn't mention his other name, Blackbeard!) Aargh.

I had to chuckle at the inconsistencies of the movie, particularly that house which looked ancient on the inside but it had clearly not been through *many* hurricanes as the architecture on the outside was too new! And, the wild horses are north of Corolla if I'm not mistaken-never seen them myself but know enough that they would probably never be seen in Rodanthe unless they swam the Oregon Inlet!

BTW, "Wings" are you in any relation to the store, "Wings" by chance?

cheers all.

reply

NOOO! No relation to the Wings stores.

reply

speaking of california....

here on the outer banks there is a burger joint called Kill Devil's.
there is only one other Kill Devils and if i am not mistaken, it is near LA. an athlete, can't remember if it was a basketball or football player who plays out there wanted to bring the food out west so he opened a store out there.

although, i just checked the website and it didn't mention the california one so who knows if its still open.

I have gone to the Outer Banks every year since I was little and I was there when they were making the movie. I love it. It's my second home!

Back to the comment about horses, there are also horses on Ocracoke Island, directly south of Hatteras. You ride the fairy to get there.

reply

They also shot for two weeks at North Topsail Beach on Topsail Island N.C. We saw Gere at the BP station!

My family owns a beach house in Avon that we rent out to people. Too bad I never saw any of the filming. My dad saw some of it though when he was driving by.

I spent summers on Onslow Beach at Camp LeJeune as a child. The locations in this movie brought back a lot of memories and made me want to go back.

I have been to the Outer Banks during nearly every one of my 29 years, and specifically to Hatteras (Avon, Rodanthe, Frisco) for the last 18 years. The whole island is my favorite place on earth, and it's my dream to live and work in the area. My husband and I were married at sunrise in front of the Hatteras lighthouse two years ago. It was wonderful, and we couldn't have picked a more meaningful place for our wedding. Our dream is to move to Manteo in a few years. I am originally from Virginia but moved to the Southwest when I got married, and I am DYING to get back out there! We are flying out there in three weeks to stay in Avon with my parents for a week. I can't wait. I hope a South American mudslide doesn't drown me before I can get there.

OBX OBX OBX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My family has vacationed in South Nags Head, Duck and two years ago (at the urging of my brother), Ocracoke Island. This August will be our third time on Ocracoke, and definitely not our last. There is something so special about this small island, from it's friendly people, to the untouched beaches, the wonderful restaurants -- Ocracoke has everything. I look forward to spending another two weeks in paradise!

reply

The Outer Banks are one of my favorite places. I've been going down every year for the last 10 years now. In fact I am leaving for Avon (which is south of Rodanthe) in three days and cannot wait.

There are wild horses but as many other have said they are either much further north in Corolla and down on Ocracoke Island. There are none in Rodanthe or anywhere on Hatteras Island.

It a wonderful place, sort of isolated which makes it more attractive, no boardwalks, etc. Just a place to relax, fish, Kiteboard (it's the biggest reason we go, PAMLICO Sound is great for boarding).
