Kevin Vs Russel

Make your pick: Costner or Crowe?
I even surprise myself picking Costner (crowe being one of my fav actor)
The original was twice as good as Scott's.

Errol Flynn first and foremost, always. Then Crowe, because I'm a sucker for that actor and because I actually think his Robin Hood was great - I wasn't crazy about the movie, but I liked the main characters well enough. Costner comes last for me - not crazy about the character, but I do love the movie.

There's nothing "original" about Costner's movie, nor is Flynn's "the original" either. Portrayals of Robin Hood on screen and in literature go back a very long way. Costner's Prince of Thieves could only be referred to as "the original" if Scott's Robin Hood was a remake of POT, but it's not: it's just another Robin Hood movie.

I just looked it up quick, I guess it must've been an epic movie when it came out at the time, still looks kinda neat. I'll definitely watch it if I can get my hands on it. Don't know about the make up though...

I'm glad my mentioning this old classic triggered your interest. Of course it is very, very much dated, the costumes, sets, and even plot are nothing like what is done today. But it has its charms, and its old-fashioned quaintness I find endearing. People back then certainly weren't afraid to make the colours pop on screen. They look as colourful as medieval illuminations or stained-glass windows. Nowadays everything is grey and brown, and that is supposed to be "realistic" when it's just another form of bias - the way we imagine the Middle Ages has always been torn between absolute dreariness and absolute magnificence, the movies are no exception to that bipolar disorder...

If you like old medieval classics, try the 1953 Knights of the Round Table. I always think of that one alongside Flynn's Robin Hood, even if they're twenty years apart. Medieval movies back then didn't give a damn about historical accuracy and certainly never pretended that they did: back then the Middle Ages were just fun.

I am totally with you, here!

Russell is a more experienced fighter. I think he would win.

reply

The best performance? Russell's. The best movie? Neither.
