is this movie based on a true story?

im wondering?

reply

Somewhat, but not exactly. The author said, and I am not doing it word for word, that she was told a similar story about twin brothers where one was healthy and normal, and his twin was not and was either sent away or had died. That's pretty much the extent of what she said, but she didn't start writing the story three years after she was told this story.

So, the story with David and Norah, aren't real-life characters. But she did get an idea.

Oh that's interesting. Thanks. My sister and I were wondering about that last night as we watched it on Lifetime, did you like the movie? I liked it per say, but found it be a little over the top, I don't know why, I mean I'm not bashing it, it was a good movie but it just didn't do it for me.To be honest I didn't get emotional throughout the whole thing, and I usually do in these types of movies, I'm not cold or anything, lol. I didn't like the fact that the father "David" never got to tell anyone, or got to really meet his daughter, I didn't like the fact that his death happened right before the end, I mean he didn't even find closure with his son or ex wife at least, and the ending I felt was rushed, like when the Mom and son find out, and then theres like 2 minutes left in the film to wrap everything up, I was like whoa how do they expect to end it so suddenly, right when it was getting towards the climax, BOOM! its over. What are your thoughts?

reply

The way they just ended it was dumb. You never hear a dicussion between Nora and Phoebes foster Mother. Them talking and explaining how she came to get and raise Phoebe. So you're left to assume.

reply

I hate stuff like that, I felt like I was missing a part of the movie,I agree.

reply

I didn't like the movie because everything happened too quick, and ending without a lot of emotion whereas the book was plenty of emotional, and that's because you were able to read everyone's side of the story about that night, what went wrong, and how David eventually regretted giving his daughter away.

Did you read the book first?

My mom said she liked the movie, but then she never read the book, and that is why I am not a fan of it. It was hard to grasp some of the scenes, and really feel for the characters in the movie version, when in the book, you felt so connected with each and every one of them. All four characters had such big roles: David, Norah, Caroline, and Paul (when he got older and had his own POV.)

If you read my "Disappointed" thread you will read a lot more about what I thought of the movie.

Bottom line, it wasn't good, and didn't do the book justice because the story itself had so much more to tell.

I have not read the book yet, I was planning on reading it. Is it better then the movie? Because I felt a bit disappointed by the movie, but have heard the book was good. What are your thoughts?

reply

the book is so much more emotional, and I actually cried while reading it because you just feel so bad for these characters as years pass. Read the book. And then watch the movie again and you will see what I mean. How it needed to be expanded into a series of sorts.

So does the book give more explanations? Like does it say how Caroline and the trucker came to be husband and wife for one thing? In the movie we just see him give her a phone number and he is gone, then we see David go back to the apartment and she is gone, after donating all her possesions. Another one like I mentioned was Caroline, Norah, Paul and Phoebe meeting and never seeing a dicussion about " oh your husband told me to put Phoebe in a instution but I couldn't leave her there so I just kept her" That is never explained. Just left to the imagintion and assumption.

On that note of Caroline just taking Phoebe in, Is that legal? Can you just raise a child with no legal court stuff and lawyers?

reply

Read the book! It explains everything so well and fills in all the gaps and answers all your questions. In the book, there are no legal conversations brought up. All David tells Caroline when he goes to her apartment and he finds out the baby is still there for her to just take care of it. As in, he's putting his daughter in Caroline's hands and what she decides to do is up to her. The author never really went into court or illegal discussions. And there really wouldn't be any argument because David wanted nothing to do with his daughter then.

Ok... so 4 years later (Happy 2012) I am going to say that I really liked the movie and felt really teary. I haven't read the book, but from what everyone's pointing out I got that from the movie. It's a lifetime movie, so you shouldn't expect Oscar-caliber type of storytelling, but this was still pretty damn good.
