Spoiler – Brett writes to his ex wife and tells her to put the sail of their yacht (which is Yellow) up as a sign whether she wants to see him again, but she had got rid of the yacht so instead covered her boat in yellow handkerchiefs so he would know that she wanted to see him again.

Thank God it wasn't a yellow ribbon around an old Oak Tree.

Ever since Tony Orlando sang that song people have been doing that for victims who are labelled heros for going through something terrible.

Most were trying to survive.

well at the end of that song the story goes there was "a thousand yellow ribbons" (instead of one)
so I imagine it did inspire the ending of this movie some what without being obvious,
it would have ruined the whole picture to have added that song!
but the characters (and most viewers) would probally be of the age to make the reference

What other people said, and also: earlier, when she went to the doctor to confirm her pregnancy, and he was going to be working up on the bridge, he told her to raise the sail on the boat if the answer was yes. The sail was yellow. That was the first yellow "handkerchief" ... then at the end he tells her to use the same signal.
