What did Brett do to go to prison

I know he said, homocide, but I did not get the whole story. I only got 3/4 way through. Also does he and Maria Bella get together, was she his wife/ex wife? She acted like she did not know him.

you should watch - it´s worth. but if you wanna know before:
she was his wife - she became pregnant and lost the child because of an abortion years ago. therefore brett became angry (more about that she didn´t tell him about that), goes out drinking, she follows, quarrel in the bar, she runs out, he after her, holds her, pressing her hand against the bar- wall, trying to calm her. and in that moment a stranger comes round the corner, misunderstands the situation, attacks brett to help her, brett defends himself and the man falls back, head against a metall thing standing there (i think it´s for firedefence- water). just an accident. she visits him in jail, will wait for him, but he wants the devorce cause he thinks that he´s not good enough for her.
that all, from their first contact until he wants devorce, is told in cutbacks.

he´s wrote her for the chance for a new start and is on the way, not knowing yet wether she wants to see him or even got the card.
it´s a journey through the land, through his memories, there´s regret and fear; and on the other side the kids come nearer one to the other - and help him through that.

a wonderful film!

I watched it til Brett got put in jail in that podunk town for defending Gordy from that Meth head. So when Brett was working for Maria Bello on the boat , etc... were they married then? Also, when they were kissing and she acts like she gets mad, were they married? Thanks for the spoilers. T

reply

while he worked at her boat, they weren´t - they´d just met because she was looking for anybody which could do that work. and she became angry, indeed, when he tried to put his hand under her dress (i think you mean that scene?) and didn´t want to see him again; but later she accepted his apology, and in the next cutback (or that after that?) they live together and she tells that she´s pregnant. as far as i remember it was never mentioned that they were married, it became clear that they were at all, when he wanted the divorce (no divorce- documents without marriage).
you really should watch the film; the filmtitle sources in a "combination" of a certain cutbacked situation and the end of the story; and the development between (among?) the kids is touching and well told (and acted!), too.

They have subtitles, Amazon in the US will allow you to watch w/ subs and I also rented some from netflix w/ subs. I love German films.

It was manslaughter, not homicide.

More like assisted suicide

It was manslaughter, not homicide.

It was both.

"Homicide" = killing someone -- very general.

"Manslaughter" is "causing someone’s death illegally but without intending to", and is sometimes called third-degree murder.
