Why did the sheriff lie about Jessica Alba being dead?

Unless I missed something, the older sheriff told Casey Affleck that Jessica Alba (the prostitute who was badly beaten) had died. Yet later we see that she wasn't dead. So it must have been a deliberate lie by the sheriff and others. What was the purpose of this lie? Probably, they suspected Affleck had beaten the girl and shot the son of the rich guy. But still, why they had to lie about her death? This lie apparently didn't trick Affleck into exposing himself.

You typed all that crap, and there's no actual answer anywhere in there. Why'd you even respond?

@keno4518. I thought maybe because I'm so sleepy that I missed the answer to the OP question from the person above you.Nope, they just didn't answer the question. 

Not entirely sure what relevance any of the previous responder's post has - having not read your question properly. The answer is that Bob the sheriff didn't lie about Joyce being dead. She was. The end is purely a fantasy in Lou's mind.

@dombrewer.You said:"The end is purely a fantasy in Lou's mind". Is that what happens in the book?

Don't know, but that was the way MW wanted it.

i thought he deliberately lied, hoping affleck would think he was clear and slip up. which he did anyway, but more because he was psychotic than trapped. i didn't think the end was a fantasy or delusion, but it wouldn't be the first time i was wrong.
