awesome

This movie is really good and well made. I just don't get the reason why Sobran died, was that all planned by Xas from start? I know Xas wanted to enjoy life and I'm thinking he probably used Sobran to get what he wanted. Just my thought.

I recommend you all see it in Blu-ray by the way, it's nice.

In the book at least, Sobran dies naturally of old age and illness, but a lot more time passes between then and when Xas loses his wings. I'm pretty sure Sobran was meant to have died of natural causes in the film, too, but it makes it seem like events were being manipulated by Xas a lot more than the book does, so I'm not totally sure what the director was trying to say with that ending.

An awesome abortion is what this film is.

The line at the end titles where it says: "Based on a novel by Elizabeth Knox" is true. The director and her collaborator didn't seem to understand the complexities of the book. They made Xas an utter bore in the rare scenes when he dropped in...and I shan't say who they left out in case you haven't yet viewed it. This movie encapsulates what's wrong with so many films in our era: loooooonnng scenes as if the film makers are captivated by the camera work. Previous generations of film makers moved stories along quicker and often packed more into films, including occasional subplots. Ms. Caro should be thrashed for what she did to 'The Vintner's Luck'.

BTW, The Vintner's Luck would make a wonderful A&E type mini-series.

Abortion, accurate choice of word to describe this "crime"!
Was Ms. Knox aware they would do this to her book? Wasn't she asked pre-approval of the script? Weren't her intelectual property rights violated by this? Law suit on the movie producers should be bound to happen!

I really enjoyed this captivating film and give it a solid 8 rating. I have not read the book as others have in this thread, and that withstanding, I had no problems with the scenes involving Xas nor any other aspect of this very good film.

I enjoy wine very much and I believe this film does justice to the pain and pleasure of winemaking. As Xas stated, one must experience both.

As far as the way Xas possibly "getting what he wanted", it's my personal opinion that this is not the case. I believe he truly cared for Sobran and I don't believe he used him to achieve his own personal goals. After all, it was Sobran who made the offer to have him with him to make the (final) vintage.

You know you've seen Fight Club enough times when you've seen it ONCE, ALL the way through!
