This movie...

... Makes you hate living in belgium a lot less
This is one of the best belgian movies ever.
there are others "like de hel van tanger" and "de indringer"
but this one i didn't just like, i loved it this was really great
most of the time i expect a crappy movie when it comes to a belgian film
but once in a while i'm happily surprised
especially with Ben X

Alli Jong, Killer Tomato,

there are tons of good Belgian Movies. Like Manneke Pis, Iedereen beroemd, De zaak Alzheimer, C'est arrivé pres de chez vous (and all other flicks with the superfragilistic fantastic Benoit Poelvoorde in it), and god forbid, I don't like to say it, but whenever I see Koko flanel and Hector again I start grinning like a fool (youth-sentiment I guess). Don't get discouraged by the Belgian movie industry so quickly, I know we've made some horrible, tasteless *beep* like Alias and stuff but there are some real precious pearls too! I'm glad you loved Ben X, 'cause I too thought Nic Balthazar did a wonderful job!

... what would our crappy movies have to do with a feeling of hate for living here?

I love belgium, allways have. It's an amazing country and we're very lucky to be so wealthy and have such a good social security system.
Sure, our movies are crap and we suck at pretty much every sport :p but life here is great as far as i'm concerned >_>

reply

seeing that i posted it here it was practically all about how belgium sucks when it comes to movies
i don't give a *beep* about belgium, god can't see why anyone would
but it was only about movies that i was refering to belgium as a total and complete crap fest

Hey don't forget Justine Henin. If she's not a good belgian sports-star, I'll eat my shoes...
But you're right, sports in Belgium sucks, besides our Henin =).

And Belgian movies, I believe is one of the many things that makes Belgium great.

But hey, what do YOU all think of our friend, Yves Leterme ?

Anyway, back to the point: I FRIKKIN' loved Ben X...
I was told by many people that the movie sucked, but holy sh!t, was I misinformed.

I could really feel the grievance of the parents and the teachers at his funeral and I could really feel the hate for those 2 *beep* e r s who kept picking on him.

It's all taken off of a true story but in real life, the guy's dead... He really did kill himself, which makes the movie sooooo much cooler.

If I were Ben's dad and I'd have seen that movie of him on the table with his pants down and THAT would be the reason why my son killed himself, I'd track'em down and kill them ... very slowly ...

Ben X ftw =).

She lives in Monaco, just like Tom Boonen, so to me, she's not a Belgian :P
(seriously, they make millions each year, but as soon as they have to pay taxes to contribute to our social wellfare they all run off to Monaco... It's freaking ridiculous)

Yes, Belgian movies have sucked for a long time. Almost in the same degree as Belgian tv-series. But they're learning. "Verlengd Weekend" wasn't that bad. "De Zaak Alzheimer" wasn't brilliant but okay. Haven't seen "Vermist" yet, but at least Jan Verheyen is taking a break from all his soccer movies. It's like people are finally growing up. It's no longer all about slapstick comedy or sex. There's still room for improvement, though, but with smaller budgets than what US audiences are used to it is a difficult job.

Excuse the hell out of me, but Belgian movies still suck.
Ben X was laughable, poorly directed, poorly acted, the cinematography was ugly as hell, and the ending was a disgrace. Especially knowing that the guy that this movie is based on actually DID kill himself.
I don't mind happy endings, but it has to fit the movie, and this one doesn't. Nic Balthazar = a damn hack that should stick to watching movies instead of making them.

Pfieuw, sorry, don't know what just got a hold of me, but I'm fine now. My blood just starts pumping when someone calls this "the best movie Belgium has produced in recent years"

Dagen Zonder Lief en Linkeroever were a million times better than this crap.

"Let's get down to brass tacks. How much for the ape?"

reply

I agree with the above poster that Dagen zonder Lief is a great movie and that it was way better than this Ben X thingy - but I disagree with the most important thing he says: Belgian films are amazing.
Like someone has said before, Benoit Poelvoorde is an amazing actor and has played in some pretty good Belgian movies. All the films by the Dardenne brothers are good too and then there are a lot more too 'Any where the wind blows', 'Seteve+Sky', 'Ex-Dummer', 'Een ander zijn geluk', 'Olivetti 82, 'Kassablanca', 'Meisje', ... I could go on for hours.

We Belgians have a lot to be proud of: great movies, a great music scene, a great art scene, amazing literary writers!

But this movie... BAD!
Everything about it was completely unbelievable... Greg and Titus playing 17 year olds? Right.
I was an admirer of Nic Balthazar (loved the theater monologue!) but I'm so disappointed now. It was one of the most hyped and overrated movies ever.
And the saddest part is... I knew a Ben X. He killed himself. And this movie did nothing for me. I thought it would really touch me with my experiences, but it did not at all.

reply

greenanika - I should have been more specific: Flemish movies are terrible, the Walloons (zegt ge da zo?) actually make good movies. They've got the Dardennes, who are always great, and even have actual classic like C'est arrivé près de chez vous. Flemish movies are *beep* In the last few years, maybe 4,5 truly good movies have come out (and I'm NOT talking about Alzheimer, I *beep* hate that movie).

"Let's get down to brass tacks. How much for the ape?"

reply

I hate Alzheimer too :)
But I was talking about the many good 'Flemish' films that were made, not about the commercial so called successes of Jan Verheyen & co.

But the best Belgian movie ever made is of course "C'est arrivé..." :)

reply

When do you think it will come out in America?
