30-year-old teenagers

Is Timmermans' character really supposed to be a teenager? The movie premise sounds interesting, but I think I would have a hard time taking it seriously if the actor looks nothing like the character he's trying to portray.

Personally I think he looks the part.

reply

No. He looks old. I'm looking at the movie poster right now and he has prominent laugh lines.

I agree with 'ube-5' for 100%. But the worst is, Ben can't act !

reply

I think the acting was spot on. Remember, he's portraying a person who is as far from "normal" as you can get.

it changes between shots, i thought, sometimes he definetely looks way to old, other times it still works, even though casting such an old guy remains a weird choice.

I've seen the movie, and I sincerly think that nobody else could play the part as well as he did. And no, I don't think he look so old. He looks great for the part, and no, even tough he's in his late twenties (I think), he looks young...

reply

He definately was good but c'mon how can you seriously dispute the fact that this guy wasn't too old for the part...when he so obviously was!

i enjoyed this film but i do agree that the moment he appeared on screen i could tell he was about 30 or atleast in his very late 20s. it wasn't really distracting, but i was surprised. i had only seen him on the dvd cover which i didn't pay much attention to. but on screen i could tell he was quite older than the character. i like when teens actually portray teens. even people in their early 20s portraying older teens (17-19) is preferable. but it was still ok. the actor did a good job.

reply

He definitely was way too old. Is he very popular in the Netherlands or Belgium or why did they cast him? I thought some of the younger Bens in the flashbacks did quite a good job, they should have cast a real teenager for the role. Still a good movie but you just can't ignore the fact that the main character looks way too old.

reply

casting is just so important. i'd rather have an actor that can do a great job, than a look-alike or age-right. so far i've seen comments from mothers of children with Aspergers that said the acting was spot on. so kudos to Balthazar for casting Timmermans even if he's much older.

Have you never watched Beverley Hills 90210?

The reason we see so many young characters in TV shows and movies being portrayed by older actors is that young actors are usually inexperienced in terms of acting.

The reason you often have twenty somethings portray teens is the producers don't have to deal with the work restrictions in place for younger actors.
As for this film, I thought the actor, while he did a good, not particularly great job, never looked like the teen he's supposed to be. He really was too obviously old for the part.
