Boy with the tri-coloured shirt

During the scenes of the crowd around the temple it is announced several times that a boy with the tri-coloured shirt is missing. Then, he appears in the last scene. Does anyone have a clue what this symbolizes in the movie?

well it could be many things.

in a way maybe it's an illusion because we see that since the boy 'disappears' we are introduced to many characters who have something missing in their lives. but when they find out about anwar, we see that they are aiming for something to distract themselves e.g. Manisha's character's aiming for her story, the minister gets the attention etc. when the boy appears in the end, they get what they aimed for but they are still missing that one thing, the lack of which is tormenting them....sort of an illusion.

another interpretation is that it may symbolise that all of this was much ado about nothing. the boy was missing in the beginning and ppl were worried but in the end it turned out he was alright. similarly everyone suspected anwar of being a terrorist. another illusion.

another, perhaps weaker interpretation is that the boy symbolised India, that people in India are chasing an illusion, just like each and every character in Anwar, including the title character and we notice that they are blinded by this illusion which leads to other people getting hurt.

i'll post more later.

I thought it could be that their concern for the boy mirrored their concern for their country. I loved the way Manish Jha handled this film, the deeply satirical observations he makes about patriots not being that far from zealots.
I think in wanting to find him they want to reassure themselves that their nation isn't under threat and yet they don't actually find him, he just turns up by himself at the end, safe and well and no harm done. Of course, no one mentions how careless it was to have let him wander off in the first place....
