This movie deserves more than 5.4

I am very surprised that it didn't get at least an average rating of 6 or 6.5. This movie was enjoyable to watch from beginning to end and it really kept me in suspense. Too often a movie loses itself along the way or brings in other elements that take away from the focus (i.e a romance that takes away from the story). I am not surprised that Costner liked the script enough to get involved.

Most importantly, I could not say that I anticipated much of the story as it unravelled. Far too often I watch a movie and it becomes too obvious, even to the point of me filling in the words before they say them, this movie was not predictable in this way. I enjoyed the ending, until the bitter end it had me guessing.

Overall I think this one was a bit of a gem. I didn't even hear about this movie until I saw it on the store shelf and decided it might be worth a rental. It's good to see that well written movies still exist that rely on the classic elements of suspense and mystery. I could watch movies like this any day of the week, not in rare and small doses like say Avatar.

I agree. It's like everybody has to pounce on every film Kevin makes, and finds the most trivial crap to snipe about. this was an awesome movie that deserved a lot more than it got. I sat on the edge of my seat and jumped everytime I was supposed to. I loved it.

I am not sure why people would rate a movie poorly simply because of Costner. He has been in some very good movies in his career, and the fact that his name still draws people to rent movies says something. I often think it has alot to do with Waterworld and how much money it lost, or maybe he is just not a vicious and rude person and that does not appeal to peoples savagery.

Either way. I have seen some movies which were much worse than this movie and they are rated nearly the same. It is this kind of activity that takes aqay the credibility of IMDB. People are free to vote as they please, but if it not based on an honest opinion and simply cast with prejudice than it ruins the art of movie making. I don't have alot of respect for the people who hold a grudge against someone they have never met and don't know anything about. It';s about the movie. If you want to see good movies in the future, than support them with your wallets and your honest feedback. I certainly don't like alot of the junk that is made and the less junk the better so I have more options at the video store.

I always like Costner but this movie had some shortcomings although enjoyable, I think I'll give it 6 stars. I liked the premise and the builddup but I think it kind of vanished into nothing. Also some missed opportunities in getting to see more about Cassandra and the Science people.

reply

Others don't agree with you, including myself. It is weak. The story is vague and the acting is mediocre. It's light on suspense and long on talk, talk, talk. It lacks real focus and that's something a horror movie must have.
Costner has done better and this film reminded me of those efforts.
This type of film has been done again and again and again. Most have been better than this tepid result.

reply

I agree with you criticman. I have nothing against Kevin Costner. In fact, I would hate this movie even more if he weren't in it. I was actually surprised to see it got that high of a rating.

reply

People nowadays have gotten used to a horror movie that makes them jump....music gets creepy and something jumps out and says BOO!

This movie offers a different type of scares, its more creepy, and more dramamtic. But if its not killing from beginning to end and actually has thought to it ("talk, talk, talk") its gonna be rated badly.

Also, people are....whats the word.....lazy i guess. They dont like to have to think. This ending makes you think instead of explaining every last detail.

I loved the movie, but knew after it was over i was gonna come on here and see abd reviews

reply

No, it's rated badly because it was pretty bad. A lot of movies that have killing from beginning to end and attempts at making people jump have low ratings as well.

The New Daughter - 4/10
Elephant - 9/10

So stick to the SAW chain of dumb ass movies. I mean what are they on now...SAW 15? Talk about BORING and overkill. Been there, done that. The New Daughter was very good.

reply

Typical response. Everyone who says they don't like this stinker gets the same, tired suggestions of bloodier movies they should watch. I hate plenty of gore and torture flicks, that being said the first 2 Saw movies were superb thrillers. They have gone a bit too far with the sequels but they have announced that this is the final one, and I have confidence with the return of Elwes that this one will be a big improvement in the last couple, which weren't so hot. Either way we know it will be better than The New Daughter. I mean seriously, come on. I think you should just stick to crappy direct to dvd movies. I know this had a very limited release in theaters, but this is about on par with most straight to dvd horror films. And clearly the only reason you like this is because you have the hots for Kevin Costner. I don't have a problem with hun, but at least I can admit when movies of some of my favorite actors/actresses aren't of quality. This movie was a joke, from beginning down to his ridiculous search engine searching, 'til the end.

You can have your opinion, I just don't get why, if you knew you weren't going to like it, and you might as well admit you knew before you wouldn't like it, did you see it to begin with? And why the need to come to the board just to diss it? Do you hope others who might want to see it, take your critique of it and forget it? The movie was NOT a joke. It's good and entertaining and perfect for Halloween or something. The other movies you mention are the real jokes. I have no idea why good time and money are wasted on those soak you in blood movies. BUT HEY, if people out there like them, so be it. I respect that. I loved The New Daughter.

reply

I didn't know I wasn't going to like it. The back of the box made it sound interesting. Plus, I didn't pick it out in the first place, and I had nothing better to do than finish it once my sister put it on. I never back out of a movie once I've started it, no matter how much I hate it. Why the need to come to the board just to praise it? Those movies aren't just about blood, not even close. Especially the first 2. If you were talking about Hostel, I could understand.

Bang Bang You're Dead - 9/10

The Saw films were never a superb anything. That comment alone is why you get comments like "stick to saw". If someone's idea of a real horror film is Saw, they don't understand a real horror flick.

How can you possible compare New Daughter to Elephant? It's illogical in every sense.

I was very impressed with this movie. I was expecting a generic film about a haunted daughter (or a film where it's all in the father's head or something) but the twist with what the villain was, was a lot more than I was expecting. I was very surprised. Constner was good too. It was great to see him do a different kind of film.

I agree with you Dustydevil. Most people who rate on here are very young and need no talk but blood and gore and sex in them to keep them interested. I blame that on the net and video games and parents that gave them anything other than using their imagination to keep occupied.

I love the think, think, think kind where I have to wait til the end to finally know the truth, not the slasher kind. I wonder if these ADD kinds of young adults will ever grown up. They can't expect their parents to pay for them forever.

Agree. No focus, no real development, lots of hanging strings that doesn`t get picked up, strange ending... Just 1h43min of growling by the creatures.
I`m surprised taht it even got a 5.3. I say 4 at the most.
I should`ve made my fiancee rent The Messenger instead

reply

i enjoyed i would give it a 7 or 7.5. i dont think there anything wrong with Costner's acting. Sure his character made some illogical moves but thats not the actors fault.

reply

I find it funny that so many people give this a low rating, while movies like the Saw III and IV receive huge scores. You want to talk about a movie that has such an unbelievable story?

I suppose all of the intense gore and human suffering makes it such a superior movie? Nevermind the actual story, there is real life-like blood and guts.

God help us all... lol

I agree with you, I thought this movie was awesome. I only picked it up because it was partially filmed where I went to college and I thought it would be neat to see the buildings again, but it turned out to be my new favorite horror film. I'm a big movie buff and it takes a lot for a movie to scare me, and this one genuinely freaked me out for a long time. The day after I watched it, I was vacuuming the carpet in the foyer of my house and realized that I was scared of being near my front door. I kept expecting it to rattle and hear the mound walkers outside =P Illogical, I know, but I think it's the mark of a good horror film that it kept me on edge for days afterward. The acting was definitely weak, especially in the beginning, but I think the movie makes up for it in the second half. I jumped, and screamed, and shouted "OH MY GOD" more than a few times. (Especially the scene in the cop car... -shiver-) Any movie that can be that terrifying without resorting to gore and violence gets props from me, at least.

i enjoyed it, i give it a 7 out of 10

Sorry, but I stronly disagree. I was bored to death and didn't find any of it suspenceful. Scary movies don't seem to scare me anymore either, and this movie was not the solution to that problem.

The New Daughter - 4/10
Elephant - 9/10

There's no way Elephant is a 9/10. Comeon.

Filmed well and deep subject matter yes, but not great.

As far as this movie goes, 5.3 is just too low. Kevin Costner's acting was more than adequate, the story itself was interesting, sorry the "special effects" weren't up to the 100 million dollar movie budget films (Must be a bunch of Michael Bay supporters who seem to think special effects = ideas).

Could it have been better. Sure. A little better writing, a little better put together. But overall, I see no reason to give it a 5.3. 7/10 for me.

reply

I think it's a 9/10.

I was being a little easy on this giving it a 4.

The Town - 10/10

I agree. Kevin Costner does a pretty good job as in this role, and I have respect for his versatile choices of roles and his skills to perform these well. He is a very relaxed actor, which is what most acting technique tries to teach you to become.
The film is a genre film yes, but that is not a bad thing. I like when the "clichés" are used with respect for the genre. Also originality is great but you know it's hard to make something the noone has not ever done before already. This was clearly a director and an editor with not many films on their belt who had the help a more experienced director of photography and a veteran actor like kevin costner. The film is not great but it captured my attention for its entire length...Which is more than what I can say about much more popular films today.

i don't want to blow you up but this is a depressing to the bone movie.i have nothing against Kevin,i really look up to him and his craft hence waterworld and postman. Its just that i cannot find the reason to save this movie from trash.A very lame film with so much flaws.Im really diss why do mr.costner accepted the role giving his Hollywood status.this is much more like a cheap thriller with dlist stars on it.i watched t because of kevin and now im doubting every movie with a single famous actor on it.looks like all the production budget goes to him.

im sorry.just to be fair :))

i got respect to your opinion just the way i eat every food in my inlaws house :))
