Incredibly biased..

This documentary was ridiculously biased.

In fact, I don't think it would be outrageous to suggest that the film almost incites violence and gang related behaviour. It certainly glorifies it, whilst simultaneously demonising the police force.

I'm also sick of hearing people comment on how "inspiring" the film is, and how brave and successful the Abberton brothers are.

Whilst I most certainly have nothing against the Abberton bros, nor the Bra Boys.. I think that being involved in many a court case, a murder charge and forming a feared and infamous gang are hardly the highest of achievments.

A more balanced and realistic view on what could have been an interesting topic would have been infinitely more enjoyable.

Touche, Michaelflatley. You've certainly showed me up with that insightful comment. Clearly this film couldn't be any more balanced than it is. Thankyou.

When the subject of a film is also it's director it can't help but be more biased then a thrid party making a documentary.

That being said I really did enjoy this film, and the score by Jamie Holt was incredible.

reply

Ya, I know. I coulda swore that the song featured in the flick, "My Brother's Keeper" was Leonard Cohen...and that's a huge compliment.

Its an advertisement for how great a collection of violent rapists, murderers and thieves are. Yes. One of them can Surf very well. So lets excuse the rest that like to beat down pregnant women, bash old men for a couple of bucks or rape tourists.

reply

I agree with the OP
They glorified many events that were not on
Fair enough they were brought up in a *beep* environment, and its great that they grew up from it and have become famous world-wide for their surfing skills.
But some of that footage was disgusting. They had a brawl with the police and practically got let off...and they made it look like it was nothing.

If they got rid of the bits making the police look like nosy rats as well as the random footage of foolish behaviour (stopping a bus in the middle of the road? just because they are bored and jobless that gives them the right to stop others from doing their job or getting to their job? ) then this film would have been alright.

I figured out your complicated little gizmo

That sounds like you're saying if they got rid of the scenes of reality, it'd be a better documentary. It also sounds like you want them to hide the scenes you find abhorrent so you can feel more comfortable admiring them.

I think if they ADDED at least a few scenes of reality it'd be a better documentary. For instance, show them beating the living crap out of weaker, defenceless people for little to no reason. This film was closer to a fairytale than a documentary.

I agree... this film is RACIST!

Flately my dear, I don't riverdance.

I figure this flick is about as biased as anything Michael Moore does but inherently more entertaining.

Whoever gave the green light to get this "doco" made needs his head examined. The "Bra Boys" are nothing but pathetic thugs caught up in their own baseless mythology. But I guess that's just Sydney all over.

Pathetic generalization at its finest

I don't really think they were glorifying anything..nor do i think it was biased.
People who watch this type of doco should be mature enough to see that their lifestyle HAS NOT been ideal or 'model citizen'

BUT Ideally they WANT a 'surf' lifestyle that can exist without crime. And they certainely WANT to now disassociate their 'gang' from the term 'pathetic thugs'..NO DRUGS NO CRIME..just surf.

some people must not know the definition of documentary...because docos show reality and to take out certain scenes or to edit it 'family friendly' would be ingenuine.

reply

I'm pissed its not about cripples learning to dance which is what I was told it was about.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

reply

Everyone needs to get the sand out of their vijays. It's a surf doc, not saying that crime is great like half of you are saying. It just presents the Bra Boys and their lifestyle. While I admit some of the court case stuff was lame, I think the biased comments aren't too bad because they're not presented as fact, it's just some of the Bra Boys telling their side of the story. Crowe never demonizes the police, just the Bra Boys, so as I said, just some guys giving their view on things. Watch the film and take it for what it is, an interesting story.

Condemning violence is *beep* millions of people grew up in a *beep* up world, that is not an excuse for violence, grow the *beep* up.!!!

Patriotism; superstition that robs man of self-respect, dignity and increases his arrogance.

reply

I enjoyed this. There are a good handful of pros and well known chargers who grew up in less than desirable environments and used surfing to pull themselves out of those environments. It's nice to see that sketchiness be a portion of the subject matter once in a while.

People need to step out of their own paradigm once in a while and just watch a movie.

I know, i mean like lets just put a bunch of pixies and elf's on the screen watch them dance around and solve problems together! hehe sounds like entertaining television to me!

Its a documentary... With REAL LIFE FOOTAGE how much more realistic do you want? Interesting topic? ITS THEIR LIFE lol They told it how it happened?

Some mates from Sydney that had an interesting life.. Life on the streets that isn't glamors, just what they portrayed.. They showed it their way no *beep* its biased... I don't see any posts about how the media is so biased towards the Bra boys situation? I'm watching a Documentary about a surf gang, i want raw, dirty and REAL footage.. Not a Political debate about right and wrong..

Before you judge a movie as "Bad" Ask yourself.."What would I rather watch this or The Happening?"

reply

I can't believe I posted on this board a year ago.

If you guys want to see a good surf doco watch 'Bustin' down the door'. It's interesting and a good watch :)

What's the story Morning Glory?

reply

Totally agree. Like Moore's pseudo docu's which are distortions of the truth and manipulations just for entertainment's sake. Worst of all, afterwards these falsifications are taken for the truth.

The media presents them as thugs but sometimes u have to stand up for yourselves and if anyone thinks the australian police force isnt corrupt as hell and are thugs then there head is so far up thier arse they dont know whats what thats the reality the cops r worse than most gangs. also generalising that they are all thugs is wrong i mean john sutton is a successful footy player that has never been in off field dramas.
