Not your typical 'made for TV' movie. I was impressed!

I like how they left the tears and syrupy dialogue out of this film and simply told a story. The old people made this movie work very well and added something special. The only cliche is something that happens to grandpa later in the movie but I won't get into it. I felt it was unnecessary, IMO. Ernest Borgnine is such a great actor!

I absolutely agree! Of the multitude of made for TV Christmas movies produced in recent years, this is my favorite, and I find the many negative comments here puzzling. Ernest Borgnine was a larger than life acting phenomenon, and he was incapable of giving less than his all in any role. The exuberance with which he approached this part is infectious, and I found his chemistry with young Juliette Goglia completely convincing. Furthermore, the extraordinary performances of so many old pros, including Katherine Helmond, Tracy Nelson, Jamie Farr and Richard Libertini are delightful. If you haven't seen it, give it a try!
