where did he get the 100k from?

I know he won 100k from the gambling at the casino, but I thought the 100k was in the brown bag he had and if he had a check for 100k why get the 25k from loan sharks then lose all the money and have them break your arm? I just didn't get that. If he knew he wanted to bring his family home nice stuff why didn't he pick the phone up when his daugther called? and who was the cop harrassing her and what for?

That part of the movie was really weird. He looked miserable after he lost the $$. it's not likely that he would have borrowed an extra $25K from the loan shark, is it? It was not very well written. the movie had many unexplained plots. i'm glad that I didn't pay $$ to see this thing at the movie theater.

I'm guessing that he was so drunk/ weak/ tripped out from the cancer and the alcohol that he forgot he had only blown the cash, did not remember he had the bulk of his winnings in check form and THOUGHT he blew all of it, but in fact did not.

I know, I don't really buy it either, but I think that's how the screenplay was supposed to go...

Yes, that's it, although with a 14 he was likely to blow it but he was probably lucky and got another 7.

He then decided to not give the 25K back and to keep it all for himself, thinking the SUV and the broken arm (or worse) was worth it.

I find it hard to believe.

I personally would have paid the loan shark with their interest, got my SUV back and then drove back home, using the cash to pay for my cancer treatment (yeah, let's not start an argument over our beautiful and perfect health insurance system).

How did you not understand it? It's as few others are saying. He won $100k, he lost $100k, he went to the loan sharks, got $25k. He then won the $100k back and decided that the $25k for his family is more important than his hand because he is already dying from cancer. He put the check in his sock so the sharks wouldn't find it and acted miserable without saying a word in order to fool them.

Good explanation, Wheelz. I was confused about that too.

He won big, put 100K into a casino check, then continued gambling because a) he discovered gambling was quite a thrill as a dying man who seemed to have stumbled onto divine assistance . . . later, after losing the money he was gambling with, he went to the loan sharks . . . he was basically acting out the hopeless addicted form of gambling (with the added nihilism of being terminally ill anyhow) BUT only with money beyond the winnings he put aside for his family that he knew they would need after his death.

I thought it was awesome. He had the strength of character to put aside the good part of his luck for his family before continuing his own battle with chance, hopelessness, and luck.
