Australian + American humour

I think the reason why it worked in Australia & not so much in the states is because Australians are more able to laugh at ourselves. Americans become a bit more serious. Shows like " Married with children ", " Roseanne " etc are much loved in Australia because it's self reflecting.

I don't think that Jane Turner and Gina Riley would have sold the show to the US unless they thought it would work in their genre. Of course it had to be twigged to work over there and it didn't look too bad. However from my point of view, Kel, was a nerd. The character was someone trying to be "hip" but wasn't really a contender in the personality stakes. He dressed, acted and even his hair do was typical of someone trying, very trying. His US character didn't seem to have this. Kath was your typical "mutton dressed as lamb" persona also thinking she was a hot Mumma but missed. Trying to be the classy fashion follower but failed miserably. Kath was the 20 something spoilt, narcissistic, chubby bitch, thinking she is a "hornbag", translation: a hot chick. "Hornbag" is not a term we use in Oz, made up because it translates to us as a tramp. Her words don't come out as she hopes they do. Eg: "Mum, I want to be effluent", "I'm gropable", "I'm going to wipe the floor with my dress". She is a size 14 (US size 16) trying to push her body into a Size 10. This is true that Gina is a healthy size 12 and specially bought size 10 clothes so her character would look ridiculous, her tummy and hips overflowing from the skimpy tops and bottoms she tried to squeeze into. Trying to be the "hot chick". Unfortunately the US version totally failed in this unless it wasn't part of their story. Then there is the "Sharon" character. Kim lorded over her because of her size, it made her look good. Her "Second best friend" did all her bidding, was rubbished unmercifully and yet, like a devoted dog, stuck with her. To me the two shows are different and I'm glad they didn't go for a total clone because shows like that don't work very well. Thinking some brilliant British shows that came out to Oz failed dismally because they kept to the script religiously when they should have twigged it to suit this climate.
