Great Score. But....

I love the score for this film. It differs a lot from the original trilogy one in it that it doesn't go for a fantastical and thriling approach, but explores Peter Parker and his innocence and discovery as a hero.

I also really like how Webb deals with dialogue and drama scenes.

Apart from that, I think it's right down insulting to the fans not to change practically anything from Raimi's original in terms of the story.

The Lizard's design is weak as hell and that makes me mad because there has been so many kick-ass designs of the villain in the comics. Not only that but Connor's character is not interesting. His idea for changing the world has a lot to it, but it's execution in the film is poor.

There is a change in terms of how Uncle Ben has more atitude towards Peter as a father figure. But that is such a tiny thing you know, especially when they play the plot in the exact same way.

The score is very good. No surprise there, given it's James Horner. May he rest in peace.

The dialogue between Peter and Gwen is solid and they have good chemistry. Denis Leary is better than he should be. But both Martin Sheen and Sally Field are wasted as Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Didn't give a shit about Peter Parker's parents.

The worst element about the movie is that it rehashes the first Raimi movie with very few in the way of original ideas. Except that maybe Oscorp is creating villains on purpose or something. It's been a while since I saw this. Maybe if they didn't make it an origin movie and just introduced us to Parker after he is already operating as Spider-Man, kind of like Batman (1989).

I'm pretty sure there's deleted scenes with the Lizard. Because Irrfan Khan straight up disappears after the bridge scene. I didn't mind his design and voicework but something more monstrous would be more interesting.

I remember really liking the first TASM movie when it came out. Looking back I still like it but it's very derivative and unimaginative.

Agreed, there was no need for this to be an origin movie again and it completely wastes the lizard as a villain. We never see anything about the effect his transformation has on his family.

There’s just too much death in this movie as well. We see Uncle Ben die in the first half of the film and then Gwen’s dad dies at the end. It’s all a bit doom and gloom when really it should have been a fun movie that deals with Spidey’s first love and trying to save a good man who accidentally transforms himself into a monster.

I loved how in the 90’s animated series Spider-Man managed to reverse Dr Connors’ transformation back into his human self and there was never any proof that Connors was ever the lizard and he’s able to resume his life. Instead in the film Connors’ life is ruined and he ends up in jail.

Also I would have scrapped all of the Oscorp and missing parents conspiracy stuff, I didn’t find that interesting at all. Instead Peter and Gwen should have just been Connors’ research assistants at a random lab.

I like the action scenes though, particularly the fight in the sewers and the at the school, just wish they’d been a bit longer.

Overall this isn’t a bad movie, in fact I think it’s quite good but I find the films flaws really obvious and difficult to overlook.

No, it's not. It just kind of plays it safe and when it does something different it's not that interesting. Leagues ahead of the second one thanks to actually trying to have a three-act plot structure.

I just rewatched the second one and it is such an overstuffed mess. It has as many subplots going on as Pirates of the Caribbean 3. The middle section of the film you can sense the writers trying to juggle all the plot threads to lead up to the finale. It's easily the worst Spider-Man film for me.
