Anyone think he deserved to die. I mean the guy selfishly uses a deathbed promise to guilt-trip Peter from staying away from daughter who genuinely love each other like Gwen's own heart and ability to make her own decisions don't matter.

No, not really. He was concerned about his daughter's safety.

I don't think he deserved to die. He was kind of a hardass in this movie, though. In the comics, the captain told Peter to look after Gwen, not to stay away from her.
