Gurren against top anime

Cowboy Bebop is like Mad Men or Breaking Bad. It's got great character development, cinematography, music, and has a cinematic vision in how the stories are told. The best part of all (and why I think it's similar to Mad Men) is the atmosphere it brings. It's cool as hell. Cowboy Bebop is a technically perfect show.

Death Note is fun and has good twists, but it's really weak sometimes. There's no subtlety and everything's explained. It starts off really good, but gets worse and worse. I compare it to Dexter.

I haven't seen Berserk.

I think shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Madoka Magica, Monster, and even FLCL deserve some recognition as great anime as well. I think they delve into more interesting concepts and stories than Cowboy Bebop. They're not (necessarily) as well crafted, but the highs are higher.

Then there's Gurren Lagann. The lows are terrible, but the highs are some of the best moments I've ever seen on a television show. Gurren Lagann is the most emotionally investing anime I've ever seen.

To sum it up, Gurren Lagann isn't as technically good as Cowboy Bebop. However, I think it has a lot more heart. Gurren Lagann is what the word "epic" was originally intended for. It cures depression. It's an exaggerated hyperbole. It's just awesome, and everyone should watch it.

TL;DR: I like Gurren Lagann more than Cowboy Bebop and Death Note (haven't seen Berserk) as well as a bunch of other anime that are well-received.
