Yes, after finishing his work on Peter Pan at Skywalker Sound, he left sound design to join Pixar as a Director.

Gary's been associated with Pixar since it's conception. He did the sound design for Luxo Jr. (the famouse Pixar short from were the Lamp on the logo comes from) and never looked back ever since. Doing the sound design for most of Pixar movies.
Since he didn't do the sound design for Lifted, I'm really looking forward as who was Skywalker Sound's fearless designer to jump in this LARGE task.

Hihihi! :o)
The guy who did the Sound Design on Lifted must had a heavy stress on his shoulders (being "judged" by Gary at the end) :o)

Actually, Rydstrom did his own sound design on this one. I'm guessing he may hand that off when he does his first feature. Ben Burtt was supposed to switch over to directing as well, but latest word from Pixar is that he's doing sound work on Wall-E.

huuuummm WALL-E :)
That's one very nice sound we have at the end of the teaser : "Waaal..-Eeeee" :o) It's so weird and intriguing! ... I like it !!!!! :o)

Actually, the "voice" from Wall-E is the one of Ben Burtt, who has used his own voice before to design the sounds of R2-D2.
I've seen LIFTED today (along with Ratatouille), very funny indeed. There is almost no music in there, so master Rydstrom had plenty of space to play with sound. Great Pixar short. (And Ratatouille is pretty damn fantastic as well).

I just learned that he's a famous "sound guy" and realized how much the short relies on perfect timing for sound effects. The short angelic chorus before the poor human gets punched on the ceiling... I didn't laugh so hard in a Pixar production for quite a while.

Thank you movie-scientists, for explaining me why I shouldn't enjoy this movie.

Just a note, Ben Burtt and Gary Rydstrom never "gave up" doing Sound Design and decided to solely direct. They just both decided start doing some Directorial work at Pixar. I doubt that either of these landmark Sound Designers will ever stop doing sound design, they just aren't going to do non-stop, one movie after the next like most full time professional Sound Designers, Editors, & Mixers do.
