How realistic (alcohol?)

I noticed a few times during the film that Hussein and his family were drinking Vodka, Champagne etc. Since they are Sunni Muslims, would this be an accurate portrayal? I'm guessing yes, that they placed opulence above religion, but does anyone know how strict their religious beliefs went?

Cheers

If you dislike the IMDB's new look, please consider signing the following petition..
http://www.petitiononline.com/IMDBKEEP/petition.html. Hopefully, with sufficient signatures, the IMDB staff will, at the very least give us the option of retaining the old look, on a permanent basis.

Thanks, and please help draw attention to the poll, if you believe it to be worthwhile. The more signatures, the more chance we have of keeping our IMDB as it is!" :)

That was kind of the point of my post. Did they profess to be one thing, and behind closed doors, ignore the core beliefs of their faith. I know about the terrible things they did, and equally that Iraq is secular.. what I don't know is how accurate the film was, which is why I asked. I don't doubt any of the awful things they did, not for a split second, which is why I didn't even bother asking about them. They were monsters.

For the record, I'm an Atheist, and can't stand the classification of people into religions any more than you do. I'm happy for people to have faith; it's when that faith is distorted, and a particular religion is used as a smokescreen for their atrocities.

Your signature is interesting.. I mentioned that myself in a post a few days ago http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0415833/board/thread/69697068?d=74056904#74056904

I've always found the concept of friendly fire decidedly bizarre!

Hmmm.. don't get me started on that one.. Absolutely appalling, and that's all I'm saying, otherwise my post will probably equal War and Peace in length.

Hi,

I'm from the South coast of England. I'm not anti-American either, but there are a select few Americans who give the country a bad name with their attitude. Unfortunately they fuel people's prejudice against their nation. Any of the Americans I have ever encountered have always been nothing but pleasant, and anything but arrogant.

I'd be glad to have your e-mail addy.. drop me a PM, and I'll reply with mine.

Cheers :)

Finally, intelligent people on IMDB. I'm so glad that you both can read between the lines and have your own opinions.
phew! And I thought I was nuts.

Shhh... don't tell anyone.. intelligent people on the IMDB.. people really will think you're nuts! There's a few of us around, but we seem to be greatly outnumbered by IMDB fundamentalist idiots! ;)

Re the drinking of alcohol. Hussein and his clique indulged in leisures not allowed or affordable to average Iraqis. There is some dialogue where Uday tells his father that his son-in-law can't be trusted because he doesn't smoke or drink.
I saw this docudrama yesterday night. I was highly impressed, so much so that I taped it when it was re-run early this morning.Saddam Hussein really was akin to a mob boss. His favourite film was, reportedly, the "Godfather" trilogy.

Saddam and his family were not religious at all. The only pretended to be sometimes, just so people wouldn't be too pissed at the hypocrisy.
