How I imagine the idea forming

The guy who had the idea for Psycho (1998): Let's do that funny British show, The IT Crowd!
Executive: How do we do that?
T: Well we recast most parts but leave one person so he's even more alienated, retype the script by Americans in American dialect, and change little somethings from every joke so the jokes just aren't funny at all anymore
E: Hey, I like that idea! Let's call Joel McHale before he does Community!
T: Alright! I'll get right on dumbing it down to unnecessary levels!
E: Perfect.

And I really really hoped I wouldn't die

Agreed. It's similar to what they did to the office but on an unheard of level of failure. LoL

I don't understand why they think they have to "dumb it down". In spite of what you may have heard, many of us Americans are not stupid. We crave better comedy shows. And it's not like the original "IT Crowd" was Noel Coward or something.
