How would you have ended the show?

I'm curious to see what people would have changed about the final season in order to cement it's place as one of the greatest TV shows of all time.

Which it was inevitably on track to be until the abomination that was the final season (season 8).

I'd have ended it with 2 more seasons, where Jon and Dany spend season 8 growing further apart as they fight the Others (and win, of course). My season 9 would have been a full-out civil war between Team Dany Targaryan and Team Jon Targaryan, with all the major characters picking sides and killing each other, and Jon wins. He's very unhappy to become king, but doesn't see any other way to stop the constant wars, so he accepts a life of joyless duty just like he lived with the Night's Watch.

I went into more detail on previous rounds of the what-if game.

Sure, sounds great! I don't know why they were in such a hurry to end a hit show anyhow. I get that showrunners were ready to move on, but they should have handed the show off to somebody else. It truly couldn't have been any worse.

...and at the end, Jon is bring pressured to marry either a (surviving) Sand Snake or Sansa, as they both rule a former kingdom that's threatening to become independent... which is what I mean by a life of joyless duty! He just wants to live with the Wildlings and find himself a nice bossy spearwife!

Honestly, S8 was a needless botch, just because some dickhwads wanted to get it over with ASAP. The Mad Queen thing could have been great, if they hadnt had her go from sane to batshit in about 3 episodes!

I would have ended with the white walkers taking over the world and killing everybody...with the moral of the story being all their politics and political machinations( the humans politics. Not the walkers) were pointless because the end of their world was always imminent.

Off the top of my head and I haven't thought of this show in a bit...

Should have had a full season of 'winter is here' with all different parts of Westeros fighting the Night King. In that season people die (Bron, Varys, Theon, Thormond, etc) and they could have spread out the important deaths a bit. They could have put the Hound/Mountain fight in this season as they meet on the battlefield. During this you see the slow but inevitable demise of Dany. At the end of the season, John decides he has to step up and fight her for the throne or she will decimate the country. They have a final confrontation and John/The North splits from her. The Night King has made his way through the North and they finally beat him (pick a battlefield).

The last season is the internal fight for Westeros. It's Danny versus John versus Cercei. Jamie puls a murder/suicide with Cercei as she is starting to win (as she held her troops back while the King invades the north), and that turns the tide of the war and completes his character arc. Danny sends Gray Worm to kill John and they have an epic fight. While this happens Danny is murdered by Arya.

Lots of people die and in the end John does win, but at what cost? Westeros is decimated and half the country has died from war (either violence, famine, bystanders in the way, etc). He reluctantly takes over and we are left with him brooding on the throne. Bran goes back to that tree (because who really cares about Bran), Sansa runs the north (she falls in love with Gendry who really steps up as a character), Arya becomes the first woman to run the King's Guard and becomes more swashbuckling and fun, etc.

Peter Dinklage(Tyrion Lannister) waking up and rolling over and hugging The Rock(Dwayne Johnson) and saying, "Honey, I had the strangest dream".

Camera pans to The Rock's face.

The Rock says, "Who The Fuck are YOU"?????

Then he says, Just kidding, let's cuddle.

I go for the fairly apocalyptic ending.

Season 7

Dany invades Westeros, immediately attacks the Red Keep with 3 dragons, wipes out Cersei, Jaime, Qyburn, lesbian hand maiden, Euron & plot hole fleet, and the Mountain, as well as Lannister forces. The keep and fleet are destroyed, but the rest of King's Landing is intact. Dorne and Reach send food resources to the people of King's Landing, they pledge their support for Targaryen once again.

Jon sends an envoy, needs dragonglass, Sam discovers dragonglass notes at Oldtown and Dany approves of Jon mining it on dragonstone. Jon pledges the north, as does the Riverlands and and the Eyrie.

Lannisport and Casterly Rock are easily taken by Dany forces. Dany marches her armies north, Dorne and Reach and a few unsullied remain south to maintain the peace. Freys are taken out by Arya as before, their armies scattered.

Season 8

Night King blows horn that topples the wall, marches 250,000 Undead south as he conquers northern towns, villages, and castles. Night King encounters Dany forces at The Twins, a huge battle ensues. Night King kills a dragon, and converts it to an ice dragon as before. The southern forces are forced to retreat. Night King forces cross the Forks/Trident and make their way to King's Landing.

Dany forces again attempt to route the Night King at Harrenhal, but Night King overwelms as before. Dany forces retreat to King's Landing.

Night King arrives at King's Landing, 300,000 strong. Attacks King's Landing, Dany forces are overwhelmed, forced to retreat to Dragonstone. Dorne & Reach forces return to their lands. Ravens fly, an evacuation for all the living to retreat to Essos is organized.

Iron Islands sends ships evacuates the living to Essos. Night King unable to cross over the Narrow Sea. Further conquers the south of Westeros including Dorne, Reach, and Oldtown. Dany forces retreat to Braavos. The Night King, in full control of Westeros, smiles as the Game of Thrones is ended.

NUCLEAR WAR.

To be honest I think no matter how it ended people would have been disappointed.

I don't think the ending was the issue for me but more the rushing of it. The war with the white walkers was far too rushed for something that had been building up right from episode 1 of the show so make that a full series.

The last series would be about the battle for the iron throne and see Dany slowly go mad. I'd probably have Cerci die by someone like Dany, Jon or even Sansa rather than ruble

reply

Danerys would have still burned King's Landing to the ground, but the buildup to her madness would have been more obvious. Tyrion would have conspired to try to stop her, but been executed. Jon Snow would have been locked in the dungeon when he refused to marry her. She would end up being a worse tyrant than Cersei, and no one could stop her.
