Does this prove the writers always intended Daenerys...

To go full mad and destroy Kings Landing? And does this mean that the last book will end the same way since GRRM already said the show's finale is "similar" to what he is writing? Ugh, I hope not but if this scene from the 2nd season is proof then they planned such a shitty plot point since at least season 2.

Here's the scene from Season 2, episode 10 "Valar Morghulis"

The first part of that scene has her walking thru a snow (or possibly ash) covered throne room, that has also been destroyed, and approaching the iron throne. It is almost identical to her final scene in the finale.

And I know it's been years but I actually just started re-watching the show and forgot all about this scene.

Yes, GRRM planned that arc for her was hinted at ever since the beginning. A quote from season 1

“I am a Khaleesi of the Dothraki! I am the wife of the great Khal and I carry his son inside me! The next time you raise a hand to me will be the last time you have hands.”

Even in season 2, she went all mad queen at the gates of Qarth

"When my dragons are grown we will take back what was stolen from me and destroy those who wronged me! We will lay waste to armies and burn cities to the ground"

What made it so brilliant was that even with this foreshadowing, almost no one actually saw it coming

Awesome!

How has GRRM "hinted" at it? He hasn't even published the sixth book yet. Whatever Dany said is moot if you apply the same rationale to say Robb and Catelyn who said of the Lannisters, "We'll kill them all." Is Robb a psycho for wanting his enemies dead? Is Jon for wanting revenge on The Boltons for wanting them dead after what they did to Cat, Robb, Talisa and the Stark men? Would you apply the same thing to Stannis for attacking King's Landing and wanting Joffrey dead?

No, what we didn't see coming is D&D's disgusting attitude toward Emilia Clarke who they failed to tell all about Dany's sacking of King's Landing, then didn't have her on set to film any shots of her riding Drogon during the destruction. They never told Emilia what they were doing. Oh, and Euron's ships? Like Dany wouldn't have been looking for them knowing they had ballistas after what happened during the Loot Train Attack. Oh, the convenient capture of Missandei and betrayal by Varys? All of it was just stupid story planning. Jon's parentage suddenly meant nothing if he "didn't want it" because "she's my Queen." It was all ridiculous and GRRM has not confirmed anything about what is going to happen to Dany in the books. He's come out saying his books will not end the same as the show. I believe we won't see what he has coming.

You're all over the place. First, with respect to what Rob and Cat said, they were referring specifically to Lannisters, their sworn enemies that they were in a state of war with. Dany in **season 2** threatened to burn cities full of innocent people to the ground and she was being serious. The Mad Queen was always there.

What does letting Emilia Clarke know what was in store for her character have to do with anything? Keeping her in the dark as well probably helped to make the turn more surprising.

As far as what is coming in the books, while D&D fucked up the story, GRRM said they got the big picture right, and that includes Dany becoming the Mad Queen.

Actually a lot of people saw it coming, one of the more common predictions for the end was that she'd go all Mad Targaryan.

Although I have to point out that few of the people making that predictionunderstood the difference between the ruthless politics of that world and actual crazy, most of them were calling her "mad" every time she did any thing that wasnt sweet and forgiving.

reply

A few, but definitely not a lot. I think it is a lot like the Sixth Sense where a lot of people say they saw the twist coming, but no one did.

Nothing proves anything. GRRM has said his ending will be entirely different from the show.

George R.R. Martin Doubles Down on ‘Thrones’ Books Not Ending Exactly Like Show

https://www.indiewire.com/2020/01/george-rr-martin-thrones-books-ending-hbo-series-1202205570/

George R.R. Martin is still insisting that the ending of his “Game of Thrones” book series will differ from the TV show’s. The HBO fantasy series controversially wrapped its eight-season run last May, but Martin still has two books left to publish in the series: “The Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring.” In a recent interview with German newspaper Welt (via Esquire), Martin reminded “Game of Thrones” fans that his book ending will not be a carbon copy of what the HBO series portrayed.

“People know an ending—but not the ending,” Martin said. “The makers of the TV show had overtaken me, which I didn’t expect.”

Martin has been outspoken about the upcoming differences between his literary series and the HBO series ever since the Emmy-winning drama wrapped its run. Many “Thrones” fans were upset with the rushed narrative twists of the show’s final season, including Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) turning to the dark side and becoming the chief antagonist. Martin told Fast Company magazine (via Digital Spy) last October that the show “has been not completely faithful. Otherwise, it would have to run another five seasons.” Martin alluded to studio and network pressures as one reason the “Thrones” series didn’t stick to his planned book narrative.

Following the series finale last May, Martin took to his blog to assure fans that the show did not completely represent how he’s planning to finish his novels. “How will it all end? I hear people asking,” the author wrote. “The same ending as the show? Different? Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. I am working in a very different medium than David and Dan, never forget. They had six hours for this final season. I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3,000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done…and if more pages and chapters and scenes are needed, I’ll add them.”

“Thrones” fans have been waiting for several years for Martin to publish the next novel, “The Winds of Winter.” The book still does not have a release date. In addition to finishing up the final two “Thrones” novels, Martin is also developing and producing an HBO prequel series entitled “House of the Dragon,” which is set to focus on the early history of the Targaryen family.

He explicitly has said the books will not have the same ending.

Only if he gets off his ass and gets the damned books done.

There have been rumors that D&D changed the ending from GRRMs outline, because the contract said they could and they're dickheads.

As for Dany's vision, it looked like snow to me rather than ash. And one possible interpretation was that there was snow kn th HD iron throne... SNOW ON THE IRON THTONE, GEDDIT? JON SNOW???
