No issue with the Stannis stuff in S5?

reply

Good point; I forgot about that. Yes that was bad (well it ended bad) the build up for it was okay and mostly true to his character. In fact season 5 when stannis is interacting with Jon and his daughter it is the first time the show started to show the character in a somewhat more accurate to the book light. Of course it was a set up just to try to force a stupid twist in which he burns his own daughter alive.

I might be too forgiving to Season 5 because I think the stuff they did in slaver's bay was pretty good (for the most part); the stuff at the wall was good (especially hardhome), King's Landing and the faith militant stuff was pretty good. Season 6 IMO had a lot more problems and less redeeming episodes than even season 7. It would take me a while to explain what I mean in detail. I'll do so if you are interested?

There isn't much separation between the first four seasons for me and I consider it some of the best television of all time. I only put season 3 last as the character of Ygritte (Rose Leslie) just grated on me and she got a lot of screen time that season. I am sure I am in the minority on that.

As most fans would agree, there was a very steep drop-off after season 4. I consider 5 to be the worst of the second half.
The Dorne storyline was not well done at all and had some ridiculous dialogue ("you want a good girl, but need a bad pussy"...uggh). Then there was the ill advised Stannis heel turn. The character of Stannis that was developed in the first four seasons was not someone that would sacrifice his daughter in order to obtain more power. In seasons 1-4, he was pragmatic, and a man of principle, and someone like that wouldn't murder his own daughter just for power. In seasons 6 and 7, they corrected some of the horrid failings of season 5, but while the set pieces and CGI were top-notch, the story was lacking. Perhaps the fact these were abbreviated seasons had something to do with this, or more likely, HBO doesn't have anyone on staff that can tell a story the way GRRM can. The failings of the finale have been discussed ad nauseum, so I won't rehash it here.

I do hope GRRM finishes the story, so we aren't left with D&Ds attempt at an ending, but given he is in his 70s now, and shows no real motivation to write, I am not optimistic.

Gosh, I think Stannis does the same to his daughter in the books? Maybe my recollection is off, it's hard to keep the books and tv show straight sometimes! Anyway I didn't find Stannis' arc convincing either. I mean, I think the idea with his character was that he thought of himself as someone who would do the right thing no matter what it cost him, but that this conception of him was itself a result of his own egomania. So when the opportunity to get more power at the cost of his daughter's life came along, he took it, and his doing so revealed his true motivation.

I just don't know that a dad would ever really do that; that is what I did not find convincing. Yes there are some bad dads out there, but I think it is more common for bad dads to be people who don't really have the inner resources to pull themselves together, and not so common for them to be basically sociopaths who would make the kind of calculating decision that Stannis did.

The other part that was strange about that whole situation was that the advice about killing his daughter came from Melisandre. So was Melisandre a fake? Well, no, she can actually do magic. Is her gift of prophecy a fake? Is the Lord of Light a fake? The whole question in the books about which religions were real (if any of them), the significance of magic with the religions, all of those things, just was never really explained in a satisfying way.

I have a hard time putting 1,2,3 in place, 4 is definitely my favorite but those 3 are so equal that I had a hard time placing them in any order and changed it several times until I got fed up and settled on what it is.

Still pissed about how rushed this series turned out.
