Inquiry about Jon Snow

Thorne hated snow that much? Had it not been for him going north with Tormund, and catching a glimpse of that army, the Night's Watch would have no idea those White Walkers were on the go. It was some advance notice they needed, and plus, there were a few things learned from that skirmish.

Thorne was kind of a dick toward everyone, especially anyone he considered inferior to himself. In the books, Jon notes that Thorne seems to hate all the other recruits at least as much as he hates Jon. I think Thorne was bitter in general because he got sent to the Wall for fighting for House Targaryen during Robert's Rebellion, and so he takes it out on everyone else there.

reply

That was just it - the Starks had sent him there.

In the first book, it's said that it was Tywin Lannister that sent Thorne to the Wall. Although the Starks did support Robert's Rebellion so that could indeed be a large part of Thorne's hatred for Jon. To quote from the book:

"Chip the ice off your eyes, my good lords. Ser Alliser Thorne should be mucking out your stables, not drilling your young warriors."

"The Watch has no shortage of stableboys," Lord Mormont grumbled. "That seems to be all they send us these days. Stableboys and sneak thieves and rapers. Ser Alliser is an anointed knight, one of the few to take the black since I have been Lord Commander. He fought bravely at King's Landing."

"On the wrong side," Ser Jaremy Rykker commented dryly. "I ought to know, I was there on the battlements beside him. Tywin Lannister gave us a splendid choice. Take the black, or see our heads on spikes before evenfall. No offense intended, Tyrion."

It's also notable that Thorne immediately befriended Janos Slynt when he arrived at the Wall, even though you'd think that with Thorne's elitist outlook he would sneer at someone like Slynt who many of the nobles considered to be a commoner who jumped above his station. Slynt was exiled from King's Landing by Tyrion Lannister, son of the man who exiled Thorne, for political reasons.

Thanks for the clarification.

One day, if I ever find the time, I'll read these books.

reply

Stop reading after you have finished the third book. Book four is boring and book five is rubbish.

reply

Don't listen to Quasimodo. Books four and five are excellent. A bit poorly organized, but otherwise solid.

reply

Don't listen to Kawada_Kira. It's probably George Har Har Martin using an alias.

Book Four - A Feast for Crows ( Brienne Takes a Hike )

Brienne goes looking for Sansa Stark, all over Westeros, and doesn't find her. And that, sad to say, is about it for A Feast for Crows ! In other words it's all filler. Oh beautifully written filler I'll grant that but filler all the same.

Book Five - A Dance with Dragons

Tyrion drinks a lot, an awful lot, and in his plentiful spare time puts together a coffee table book called ' An Illustrated Guide to the Turtles of the Rhoyne River and its Tributaries '. Some Prince from Dorne we've never heard of gets himself barbecued. Yet more mercenary bands of soldiers we've never heard of turn up. This time it's Stannis' turn to take a hike and he slowly gets nowhere and yes slowly does nothing. Oh and right at the end Daenerys jumps on Drogon's back and flies off. All of this garbage would be bad enough if it wasn't so poorly written. Whoever (very competently) wrote the first three books did not write this pile of crap because it was written by a total hack.
