Old Nan for the win - she had the best stories.

In terms of public relations, Gendry had a much better story! Good honest humble working lad, talented blacksmith, finds out he's a royal bastard, fights the undead with a hammer like the hero of a story, somehow gets legitimized, and becomes king. The public would love it and would love his bluff good sense and good nature, while Bran would come across as either pitiable or creepy.

So what if he knew nothing about governing, that's why there's a Hand of the King.

reply

I thought for a while that Gendry and Arya would end up on the Iron Throne - would have been better than what they gave us.

reply

Pretty much anything would have been better than King Bran, with us not knowing whether he'll be regarded as a pitiable figurehead or an omniscient god-king who'll rule for a thousand years.

I could live with Arya and Gendry, it's not a possibility I'd considered, but could work both in story terms and political terms - King Gendry saying he's marrying Arya to bring the North back into Westeros. Personally I was rooting for King Tyrion and Queen Sansa, with the two of them being wise and competent rulers... who are trying to work up the nerve to touch each other in private.

Lady Mormont, if she were still alive. She could bitch slap anyone.

But from the living, I choose Briene.

reply

Jon snow, no contest.
From a nobody to commander. From bastard to two royal bloodlines and king, giving up the title to unite people against evil.
Getting murdered and raised from the dead! Gave up the rightful position of king again for loyalty, and to destroy a tyrant for the freedom of the seven kingdoms at the expense of his own future. He displayed a strong character and the ability to do the right thing even at severe personal cost.
Bran got crippled and became some oracle, mostly at the expense of others.
Certainly a decent second choice for a king, but as far as story goes he's beat.

There was a rumor going around that those prats D&D changed GRRM's original ending, and that GRRM's story originally ended with Jon Snow as King of Westeros. And Jamie Lannister as Hand of the King, and Snow told Jamie that if he ever became a bad ruler he should do some more Kingslaying.

It's the sort of rumor that... I didn't dismiss immediately. Frankly, that made a lot more sense in terms of buildup and story than fucking creepy Bran ending up as king.

reply

Everyone.
Bran's story was worthless. He could easily be eliminated from the story and it would mean nothing.

reply

You are 100% correct. Bran, for all the build up, added nothing to the story. If he and Rickon had both hypothetically died back in Winterfell, absolutely nothing would change. Other than giving us a few flashbacks, his raven powers did fuck all to help.

reply

Bran was the "broken" kid that became the seer of everything, past and future.

Not really King worthy, although if you lie to him he would know it - and he could see if the Kingdom had enemies.

He probably should have been the Kings advisor.

GRR Martin

I think the general dislike of Bran being King is simply because the general public do not like disabled people. True, Bran has not apparently done much, but he can see in all of space and time when he makes his eyes go white, so you'd be hard pushed to assassinate him, he'd see you coming a mile off.

reply

Always makes me chuckle since they benched him for Season 5

I can’t believe millionaire writers can be that fuckin stupid
