I agree with you.

I think the show was great until the end of season 4, then season 5, 6, and 7 had a lot of ups and downs, then the abomination of the season 8.

I think season 5 is the weakest season beside S8; although it did have what I think is the best episode of the series (Hardhome).

I might be in a minority that like season 7 better than 5 and 6. Not necessarily because of the silliness of the overall plot or the haste at which characters started to move from place to place (or the terribly end of Littlefinger's story). But many if not most of the individual scenes I liked quite a bit; especially the acting the and character interactions. I loved the first scene between Jon and Dany; I loved watching Euron slaughter the Sand Snakes; I loved watching Cersie torture Elaria. The trip north of the wall was stupidly set up yes, but the character interactions there was pretty awesome. So in short a lot of contrivances but there was enough good content to make it enjoyable. Season 8 lacked anything enjoyable.

Rewatching season 8 is painful.
