New "Name of the Rose" TV Series is riding the GoT Gravy Train.

Sundance is showing a new series based on Umberto Eco's classic novel, which was also filmed in the 80s with Sean Connery and Christian Slater. John Turturro is in the Connery role.

Looks like they are going all-out Game of Thrones with this. The credits are very reminiscent of GoT and the series starts with a bloody medieval mass battle followed by the young protagonist's warlord father in bed with a naked whore after the battle. Don't recall that part from the book or the Connery movie.

You are at long last Ignored for being a complete waste of time.

No one writes you because no one likes you.

reply

No one likes your mom, either. Even though she only charges a nickel.

reply

For some reason, I have trouble seeing John Turturro in a role like this.

reply

I agree. He doesn't seem right. Maybe they chose him because the story takes place in Northern Italy and he is of Italian descent, but the character, William of Baskerville, is supposed to be British according to Eco's novel. Perhaps it's a case of overly enthusiastic Correctness casting?

reply

He's listed as an Executive Producer as well, so that might be a factor.

reply

Maybe that's because of that constant look of amazement on his face. Or is it confusion? Connery looked witty and smart. Nevertheless, I became a fan after 'The Night of..' so Turturro is OK on my list.

Roses looks more like a low budget Borgias. Nowhere near as ambitious as GOT.

The Spanish Princess has a higher budget, looks visually good and based on historical events re: Queen Catherine of Spain who married her dead husband's brother King Henry the VIII. This is the third season in the series based on the Philippa Gregory novels with the first two focusing on Henry's mother and grandmother. They add fiction like having them practice witchcraft. Romance, political intrigue and battles.

That might make a decent miniseries, with good casting, production values, and editing. And it should be waaaay cheaper than "Game of Thrones" to make, since if I recall correctly all the action takes place in a rural monastery.

Pity I don't get that channel. Maybe I will.

I've read over a thousand books but Name of the Rose was one of the few I didn't finish. I don't remember why, it was decades ago.

reply

It's a real slog at times.

I've read all the 'Song of Ice and Fire' books and they are not worth a couple of sentences from 'Name of the Rose'. However, Martin's first three books are immensely captivating and I enjoyed reading them for what they are - popcorn. But 'Name of the Rose' that book I really hate.

reply

Never read any Martin, I don't read much fiction anymore.

reply

You didn't lose anything.
