Will you watch the prequel(s)?

So with Game of Thrones tarnished reputation will any of you actually give the prequel a go? It's chance of success looks pretty grim now.

On the one hand, even if it turns out to be awesome, can we ever trust them again? How do we know they won't rush the end again after we get invested for so many years?

But on the other hand the showrunner and writer this time is Jane Goldman who has a far, far greater track record than Benioff and Weiss had before they started on Thrones (Benioff's X-men Origins: Wolverine vs Goldman's X-Men First Class??). She also strikes me as a lot more reliable and caring of her projects. She seems like a passionate fangirl who's been given her dream job in the movies as opposed to greedy businessmen like B & W.

I will.
It if turns out they suck, I’ll just stop watching.

reply

But like Game of Thrones it could be great at first but then trash our hopes years down the line. That's the dilemma.

reply

Well yes, it could be, of course.
But it could be great all of the time, or it could start bad and then get better from season to season, or it could suck from the beginning and stay that way.

In other words: On that account, it doesn’t differ from any other new TV show.

And btw, I don’t consider the time I’ve spent on the great seasons of GoT wasted because the finale didn’t live up to my expectations. Maybe that’s where we differ.

reply

Oh, we don't differ there. I still consider Game Of Thrones to be excellent and I'm going back to the start to watch them all again. A bad ending can't undo the excellent craft that has come before.

I'm probably going to give the prequel a go too, I'm just curious what other people will do as it could get cancelled quickly if nobody watches it.

reply

> Oh, we don't differ there.

Alright, then I was jumping to conclusions, sorry!

reply

Exactly, we can always rewatch previous seasons.

I will also give the prequels a chance when they come out, but I’m not really excited about them.

reply

There's no evidence that B & W are "greedy business men". They did a terrific job of adapting the source material, but just were not quite up to filling in GRRM's missing prose.

I'll be watching the prequel but I've set expectations quite low.

reply

There's no clear cut evidence, no. It is a lot of rumour and assumption so yes, for all we know they could be victims in all this.

But the evidence we do have is pretty damning. They suddenly have Star Wars just as Game of Thrones is hastily ended. Supposedly George RR Martin said the series should be 13 seasons and there was also apparently a clash between HBO and B & W over how many seasons there should be. HBO wanted more, B & W wanted to finish it all quickly. HBO have everything to gain from further seasons while it's not in B & W's interests at all.

and the surviving "good guys" all had relatively happy endings. Bran is king, Sansa is queen in the north, Arya is a hero and off to find adventure, Jon is free from responsibility and off to live with Tormund and the wildlings, Tyrion is hand of the king, Brienne and Podrick are kingsguard, Yara is queen of the Ironborn, Sam is the kings maester, Davos is lord of ships, Bronn is coin master and lord of highgarden

Yes.
By the way, are there any good guy left who didn’t get rewarded? The positions of Master of Whisperers, Master of Laws and Master of War are vacant…

> for fuck's sake it's like a Disney movie.

Awwww no, you can’t say that…

… they didn’t sing.

wolverine and first class both sucked equally - so err.... not a great example.

reply

You may not like First Class, which is fine. But Wolverine was received very badly critically and First Class was received well critically. So I'm going by general opinion. And I specifically chose X men films because these two films demonstrated the writers attitude towards the material.

Benioff's treatment of Deadpool in Wolverine clearly demonstrated his lack of respect. First Class tends to be spoken of as the most accurate in capturing the comic's tone, so even if you don't like the film you can still kind of see there was good will behind it.

But there's also Kick Ass and Kingsman which were also both well received.

reply

The way I see it, first class was the beginning of the end of xmen - featuring youthful xmen with nearly a teen 'professor' x (the actor looks very young and not particularly wise - so it could be a casting issue). In fact, the casting was the biggest issue and it still persists, since the new xmen film will feature the same 'young xmen' cast which was never that good to begin with).

It kind of reminds me of young indiana jones tv series - which was utter shit in terms of script and casting.

reply

Everyone will tune in and give it a try.

But if you think there's any pure art for the sake of art here, I don't know what to tell you.

It's all business. Jane Goldman is not immune. She'll do everything to be the showrunner of a hit.

reply

"tarnished reputation"? Bullshit.
A great ending to a great show. Of course I'll watch the prequels.
What ending would you have preferred? Jon and Dany together on the iron throne with lots of little kids running around frolicking? Lol!

reply

I'd have preferred exactly the same ending. But properly developed over time.

reply

wow.
at least you're honest..😳

reply

> I'd have preferred exactly the same ending. But properly developed over time.

I agree almost completely.
I would have loved a bit more "bitter" in the "bittersweet" ending, i.e. some more good guys dying. As mentioned above by Orcsquisher, it was a bit too Disney this way. On the other hand – most of the good guys in Lord Of The Rings survived, too (or died and came back stronger in one specific case) and I can’t remember anyone who ever complained about THAT (neither did I).

And of course, I absolutely agree on the "properly developed" part.

As for the outcome in itself – Dany going on a rampage and therefore, having to be killed, Jon NOT becoming King, Sansa becoming Queen of the North, Arya getting to explore what’s west of Westeros, Cersei dead etc. pp. – I like that.
I even liked Arya killing the Night King (why does this feel like I just said "Jehovah"?) IF they hadn’t make it feel as if they just wanted to remove the WW from the board as quickly as possible (but that’s the "properly developed" part again).
I’m also fine with Bran becoming King, but then again, I probably would have been okay with almost ANYONE who isn’t Jon Snow.

If I had never seen Season 7 and 8 and someone had just given me a brief summary of the events, I proably would have said: "Good stuff, can’t wait to see it." – to be then disappointed with HOW they played it out.

reply

Yeah, I agree with Orcsquisher too. It was too neat. But generally the major events- Danearys going nuts, Bran becoming king and the birth of democracy I would have been fine with if they were properly developed.

reply

I'm glad you enjoyed the ending but half of the fanbase hates it, so "tarnished" is accurate.

reply

Yes I will watch it. As disappointing as the last series of GOT was, this is still a world that I am interested in.

Will the source material be from GRRM, or newly written by someone else for the TV?

reply

I believe it's a bit of both. There are other books Martin has written set in that world and I think parts of them are being incorporated and parts are being written by Goldman and Martin. But don't quote me on that.

reply

I'll watch when the series is complete. I hate having to wait years for a story to be finished.

reply

Possibly the best way to go about it. Though if it's as slow as GOT initially was and does things the right way till the end we'll probably all be collecting our pensions by the time we indulge. And thus struggle with keeping up with the dense plot due to Alzheimer's or dementia complications.

Not to mention that by that time Facebook and the internet would have developed to such an extent that all spoilers would be beamed directly into our heads as soon as we wake up each morning.
