If you wanna a good medieval fantasy series in 2019, check this one

Not kidding. First season and still airing, but writing is VERY good. After GoT "best season ever", as Emilia Clarke joked, try this:

Recommendation: DON'T read the storyline in imdb. They spoil completely the first two episodes, which have quite some unexpected twists that you don't see them coming.

Was even a little intrigued until I saw it was anime.

reply

Unless it has a floppy penis in it. Most people here wont be interested.

It’s a cartoon.

It looks mindless. GOT made you think.

reply

Actually, it's far from mindless. The opposite of it.

Unless western cinema, where comedy and drama are clearly separated, many Asian movies and series blend genres easily and can move between silly comedy and drama. This is one of them.

You can see the difference in the Godzilla franchise. The last western one is dramatic, dark, solemn... and shallow. The last Japanese one, Shin Godzilla (2016), plays often goofy comedy... and suddenly it moves to some sarcastic and very serious criticism to government. Open your mind, and don't judge Asian cinema and movies under a western frame.

reply

I'm a huge fan of foreign films including Asian. My Sassy Girlfriend, Il Mare and Twilight of the Cockroaches are examples of blended genres that I enjoyed.

The trailer fails to convey anything other than a basic cartoon about good vs. evil. The cartoon could be good as you believe, but their marketing campaign needs to present it better.

reply

I'm glad you are. Then, as you should know, good vs evil is a recurrent theme in western movies... not so much in Asian ones. Of course, there's antagonists, but they're rarely 'evil' in the western sense. They can be cruel, or ruthless, or extremely greedy, or psychopathic. They can be destructive supernatural forces, as there's destructive natural ones (that's quite common in ghost stories). However, you barely see the concept of 'Evil Empire' or 'Evil Darklord' as you see in Star Wars or LotR or Western fantasy and scifi... except in comedy parodying western tropes.

Neither you use to have characters representing 'good'. Often, main characters fight for their friends, or family, or community, or to face a threat, or just fight to survive. 'Joining the cause of good' trope is a western trope. Often, then concept of balance is more important than the concept of good or evil.

You see a cartoon about good vs evil because you're watching it with western eyes. You're trained to frame stories in terms of good vs evil. Actually, there's no good or evil in that Anime, even though there's some very mean characters. And the main theme in the series deals with the problem of joining forces and forgiving people that you despise to face a common threat. The main character himself is far from the 'good' archetype, it's a cold and ruthless character.

You need to develop empathy, and that means being able to understand how other people think.

I should have used the term "good guys" vs "bad guys". That's the vibe I get from the trailer. It felt like nothing more that a superhero type plot.

Anyway, most fans liked GOT because of its great writing and interesting characters, not because it had a medieval setting. The bad writing in recent episodes is the reason why so many fans are complaining.

A youtuber had a list of anime for disappointed GOT fans.
Berserk, Moribito, The Saga of Tanya the Evil, The Twelve Kingdoms, Fate/Zero, Attack on Titans, Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Cartoons, no thanks.

As far as Anime is concerned, I'd say the legend of galactic heroes was a series which made me think - back then. In fact, I thought back then that it was the most mature (intellectually) anime I had seen. Lots of twists and turns - and a lot of philosophy about power structures (democracy vs. monarchy).

But it's set in the future - space - spaceships - not medieval times.

Then there's Berserk - very violent, lots of twists and turns and backstabings - but an incomplete story (the original series ending suggests a follow up which never came) designed to milk the franchise to eternity. Manga turned into crap not long after - so at least you are getting the best of the story.

The one that comes to mind is Record of Lodoss War, but it's closer to D&D. It's a good mix of well drawn anime (1990), and storyline. No idea how the more recent versions are, but the old ones are classic.

reply

There's quite a few good things in modern anime, but you have to find them. This RGP-like D&D style has been popular last years, specially inside what's called the 'Isekai' genre (https://honeysanime.com/top-10-isekai-anime-best-recommendations/). Besides this one, I'd recommend another one called 'Konosuba'. It's silly goofy comedy mocking all the D&D RPG tropes, but it's cute and funny as hell.

reply

Appreciate the recommendation. In all honesty, I haven't been able to watch most of the anime from the past 10 years. I grew up with the anime from the 80's, when it felt like there was a pride in both the art and story being multi dimensional. Now it just feels very cartoony, and cheaply made....There are a few that stand out, like the Miyazaki films, but just a few.

reply

There's more than a few, but the truth is that they get lost in huge amount of Anime produced.

The best ones are usually short, 12 or 24 episodes, and they're not that popular. The most popular ones are the cartoony ones. But there's little jewels.

I'd say, to say some, Noragami, modern world mixed with japanese folklore https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JGfx2_kL-I.
Nodame Cantabile, romantic comedy mixed with classical music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsmbD7Ls6EM.
Psycho-Pass, if you wanna go Blade Runner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzuJnyebc40.

In Anime movies, Your Name is a MASTERPIECE. Don't read any spoiler! it's a ride https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xU47nhruN-Q,
When Marnie was There, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZq4uuMP8ss.
Fireworks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KG770hOuT2k. In general, last 5-10 have been a golden age for Anime movies.

Thanks, love the Psycho Pass animation! Amazing how big the industry is now. I recall having to travel down to Little Tokyo (Los Angeles) to find films at the Japanese video store.....no subtitles, little clue as to what was going on, but they were still amazing!

reply

Yeap, times have changed. I recall friends calling to talk about the new RPG that just arrived to the book store, and everybody fighting to borrow the book for a few days to take a look...

Anyway, if you like Psycho Pass style, you should check Ergo Proxy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWI97Kg8ur8

I'll watch Western adult animation like Ralph Bakshi and Heavy Metal, but Japanimation just has this odd flavor I don't like.
