Could this final season/series finale been any bigger of a failure?

What in the world happened to this once critically/mainstream beloved TV series?
After this season 8 most fans are let down in some way
The plot leaked onto the internet
Most people don't even care anymore what happens in the last episode
The terrible writing in season 8 has become a social media meme
etc. etc. etc.

The show became too big, and was done on too large a scale, for them to handle. It's unfortunate. Perhaps it's not all of their fault, but as their name is attached to the project, the blame lies on them.

reply

No.

reply

As disappointing as so much of this season has been I still haven't been bored watching it for even a second. Disappointed..big time. But not bored.

So yeah..it could've been more of a failure.

reply

This is true. I'm beyond disappointed with the ending...but still watching it to the end and it isn't boring me.

reply

They could have someone like Sansa end up as Queen

reply

Release the alternate endings.

They may be able to save the show somewhat by releasing alternate endings with one being Dany on the throne. I read they did shoot alternate endings so they should release them. That cant change Dany going nuts, but it would be a good ending for the show that the mass killer ends up winning, instead of the good guys (Jon, Sansa, Bran, Sam....)

Its obvious what happened to this show. George Martin's books ran out and they had to write it themselves. It was only great when they had George's books to use.

reply

When did they actually stop relying on Martin's books, because I've heard it was up to the end of season 4, but season 5-7 (certainly 5-6), while still being problematic in certain ways, are still good enough to stand alongside the other seasons, in my eyes. Only in this season 8 has it felt like it's only half as good as it used to be.

reply

I'll let you know tomorrow night.

reply

Despite the questionable writing and character arcs the sets, costumes, special effects and acting have all remained very strong. So yes, it could have been worse.

reply

Yes..and all this should not be discounted.

reply

I fully agree here.

And regarding the "questionable writing": In my opinion, the main problem really is that they rush some things. Parts of it feel like we’re given a summary of the events instead of the real story. It’s not as great as I hoped it’ll be, but in my opinion it’s nowhere near as bad as, say, the final season of Lost.

reply

Yes, the ending of LOST sucked, but it was nowhere near this disappointing, if for no other reason than LOST wasn't half the show GOT was, in my opinion. I could see a trainwreck of a LOST ending coming by the beginning of the third season when I thought it became obvious they had no idea where they were going with the plot and were just making it up as they went along, piling on more and more questions that you knew they'd never be able to answer satisfactorily. I don't know anyone, on the other hand, who predicted the ending of GOT would or could be this much of a failure (which just makes it all the more disappointing). I blame it solely on the writing and not lack of episodes or being rushed. The LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy was approx. 8 hours long (minus the end credits) and it told a complete epic story from beginning to middle to end, and never felt rushed. The last season of GOT, by comparison, is about 7 hours long and they couldn't even come up with a lackluster ending. I went in hoping not to be awed or amazed, but rather to just get something passable that I could live with and which wouldn't lessen the re-watchability of the show (so much for that hope). If we had gotten more episodes or more seasons, we'd have just gotten more filler and more contrivances and more characters doing stupid and contrary things simply to motivate a plot that the writers clearly had no idea what to do with. They had plenty of time to wrap this up and failed miserably.

reply

This is what disgusted me most about this final season. People keep saying it's because they didn't have enough episodes. But there was so much filler in this last season.

reply

Those are strictly technical aspects. No one watched this show just for those things. No one with a brain anyway
