Stupid Winterfell defence

Why not post meagre amounts of archers along the walls, instead of trebling the amount at least?

Station your brilliant skirmish cavalry in front of everyone for an insane dash into the darkness (even with the unexpected fire swords)

Everyone (almost) stand before the catapults and castle walls, instead of inside to defend against a mass foe of charging undead?

Why not just set one, maybe two lines of trenches against this deadly foe? Durr, Caesar in 52bc at Alesia set several trench-traps etc and that was against Gauls, not undead wights?

reply

The night is dark and full of errors.

reply

It was stupid as hell. I kept thinking how one of the dragons should have swept down and lit the place up, fry some dead people before the Dothraki charged.

reply

The night king wasn't going to let them fly out that far. As soon as they tried, he made a blizzard and blinded them.

reply

That only happened when they flew over the other white walkers who were behind the army and waiting at the edge of the forest. The dead army was closer to winterfell when the dothraki charged them.

reply

Am I right in thinking that the Unsullied should've been right at the front, with the Dothraki in the middle and the trebuchets right at the back?

reply

Yes, but I'd have set several lethal pits full of spikes/fire etc and moved the forces in/behind the castle, with the Dothraki for a flanking charge on both sides once the dragons had wiped out many wights in front of the castle?

reply

If you want to see castle defense done right, watch Kingdom of Heaven.

reply

This is a great plan for the defense of Winterfell.

Still better than Tyrion's defense of King's Landing, which they started planning when Stannis was like two days away.

Why were they fighting outside of the walls again? I thought the whole point of walls and keeps was to use them to repeal attacks. Not send your soldiers outside to defend the walls.
