The Starbucks cup

Was it in the latest episode by accident or as a publicity stunt?

reply

Accident. They don't need the publicity.

reply

No, but I'll bet they took the HUGE chunk of money that starbucks gave them to do this. I feel this was intentionally done in a show that has a hard time capitalizing on product placement. This stuff goes through SO many levels of production, it's hard to think this went unnoticed.

reply

I find it funny that no one on the crew, in the cast, producer, or director saw the cup. Makes me wonder if it was intentional product placement.

reply

I think it probably was. Knowing it would gain a lot of talk only helps that notion.

reply

I didn't notice the cup. I wouldn't even recognize it as a Starbucks cup, as someone who never went to Starbucks. Not much publicity coming from that.

reply

99.9 percent of the viewers never noticed it either. now everyone is acting like Danerys answered her cell phone on the way to Dragonstone.

reply

Was this really necessary?

The Starbucks-like coffee cup seen ’round the world — and all of Westeros — after it was accidentally left in a scene of the latest episode of “Game of Thrones” has been digitally removed.

The internet was set ablaze Monday by the revelation that the modern-looking paper cup somehow managed to make it into the final cut of a scene in the fourth episode of the eighth and final season of the hit HBO medieval fantasy show.

By Tuesday morning, the coffee cup had been digitally edited out of the scene on the HBO Go app.

In the episode titled “The Last of the Starks,” which premiered Sunday, the disposable cup was visible on a table amid medieval-like goblets next to Daenerys Targaryen, aka the Mother of Dragons, during a celebration feast at Winterfell.

HBO later confirmed that the placement of the cup — from the production’s craft services and not from Starbucks, as many fans speculated — was indeed a blunder.

“The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea,” HBO sarcastically conceded Monday.

An HBO rep confirmed to The Post on Tuesday that the fix was made digitally.

I think so. There are people that aren't watching the show now that will watch in the future. Why would HBO knowingly leave it in there and risk breaking their immersion? I find it to actually be a classy move by HBO. In a final season that's already being picked to death by so many (perhaps at times for good reasons - such as the cup), it would be really easy for them to throw their hands up and say "ehhh, fuck it". Instead, they choose to own up to their mistake and fix it, looking out for future viewers and the overall quality of the show, which many would argue they should have spent more time looking out for in the first place. And to that, I certainly wouldn't argue. There are most certainly things that could have been better.

So they digitally replaced the latte with an herbal tea?

reply

Digitally removed, I'm definitely keeping my episode in-place with the cup there and present, the upcoming blu-rays will no doubt have it removed.
